INDIANAPOLIS - - The Truman State University baseball and softball teams took home three of the top four honors from the league office on Tuesday afternoon, as the Bulldogs' Jarod Hahn, Andrea Klipsch and Kindra Henze were each named a Great Lakes Valley Conference Player/Pitcher of the Week for last week's set of games.
GLVC Baseball Player of the Week – Jarod Hahn (6-foot-0, Outfield)
Hahn, a native of O'Fallon, Mo., hit safely in seven of his eight games last week, while five were multi-hit outings. He was 14-for-23 (.609) from the plate with 10 runs batted in, three doubles, seven runs scored and a home run. He had an .870 slugging percentage and with three walks and three HBPs, and boasted a .690 on-base percentage. The junior outfielder was 4-for-6 in two non-conference games at Bellarmine last Monday, was 5-for-7 in last Tuesday's doubleheader at Southwest Baptist, and 5-for-10 while helping the Bulldogs to a 3-1 record against UW-Parkside to start conference play.
This is the first time in Truman's brief history in the league the Bulldogs have earned a weekly honor in the sport. He is the first Bulldog to win a conference player of the week award since three Bulldog pitchers (Ryan Trimble, Jarrett Eiskina, and Christian Witt) won Pitcher of the Week honors a combined five times during the 2011 season. He is the first Hitter of the Week for Truman since Josh Rubin was recognized in April of 2006.
The Bulldogs (6-7, 3-1 GLVC) enter week two of GLVC play this weekend, as the squad is set to visit the University of Indianapolis for back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
GLVC Softball Player of the Week – Andrea Klipsch (5-foot-6; Second Base)
Klipsch helped the Bulldogs improve to 16-3 with an eight-game series sweep in combination of both league and non-conference play last week. The St. Louis, Mo., native ran her hitting streak to 10 games, while hitting .533 at the plate, going 16-for-30 with two doubles, two home runs, 13 runs scored, and 12 runs batted in. She posted an .800 slugging percentage and a .576 on base percentage for the week, while recording 14 putouts at second base. Truman downed Illinois Springfield 8-0 and 9-1 both in five innings on Monday, two days later, the Bulldogs held Lincoln scoreless in the two-game series 13-0 and 9-0.
On Friday, Klipsch continued her dominant play against UW-Parkside (17-0) as she went 8-for-11 with five runs, seven RBIs, a double, and a home run. She had the eventual game-winning RBIs in game two against the Rangers, driving home two runs in the top of the 9th with a two-out RBI single. The Bulldogs closed the week registering its ninth shut out of the season over Lewis by scores of 7-0 and 4-1, respectively. For the week, Klipsch had 14 put outs and 15 assists defensively to go with no errors for a 1.000 fielding percentage.
For the season, Klipsch is batting .431 (25-for-58) with three doubles, a triple and two home runs. She has 18 total RBI and has scored 17 runs with seven walks to just six strikeouts.
The honor for Klipsch is the first of her career.
GLVC Softball Pitcher of the Week – Kindra Henze (6-foot-1; Pitcher)
Henze went 5-0 with a 0.00 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance. She struck out 32 batters in 25 innings and allowed only one extra-base hit (a double), as she improved her season record to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in league games. Henze opened the week with a complete game, five-inning shutout against Illinois Springfield where she only needed 64 pitches while striking out six. She repeated that performance at former MIAA-rival Lincoln, giving up just two singles in a complete game five-inning win.
On March 14, she threw a combined eight scoreless innings in two appearances against UW-Parkside. The Palmyra, Mo., native started game one, striking out five batters in a complete game, five-inning shutout. Then, she entered in relief in the bottom of the 7th inning in game two, getting the Bulldogs out of the inning before throwing two more scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th to get the 7-5 win. Henze struck out six more and did not allow a hit in her three innings of relief. Finally, she closed the weekend with another complete game in seven-innings to shutout Lewis, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
For the season, Henze is 9-1 in 11 appearances (10 starts), striking out 67 batters in 62.2 innings of work while walking just eight. She has an ERA of 0.45 and a walks and hits per inning pitch of 0.61.
She has already claimed the GLVC Pitcher of the Week honors twice previously this season, most recently last week (March 11).
The Bulldogs take a 14-game winning streak on the road this weekend, as Truman visits fellow West division foes Maryville (Saturday) and Missouri-St. Louis (Sunday).
