Bulldogs hold early lead to advance to GLVC Semifinals

KIRKSVILLE - - Junior Stephanie Williams and sophomore Allison Lockett each scored, while senior Alexis Heffernan added two assists, as the Truman women's soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference women's soccer tournament with a 2-1 victory against Rockhurst on Sunday.

After a scoreless first half, the No. 2 seeded Bulldogs (13-2-4) broke through in the 64th minute, when Heffernan got behind the defense and rocketed a shot at the Rockhurst (7-6-6) keeper. Caitlin Winschel made a save on Heffernan's try, but Williams followed the rebound home with her fifth goal of the season to put Truman on top, 1-0.

Then, in the 72nd minute, a long-range torpedo off the foot of Lockett snuck inside the left post for a 2-0 Truman lead. That goal was assisted again by Heffernan, along with junior Casey Maloney.

Rockhurst put one final scare in the large Bulldog crowd, as Maria Merlo corralled a ball at the top of the six-yard box from Meghan Kilkenny and scored in the 84th minute to pull the Hawks to within 2-1. However, the Bulldogs clamped down from there, as the Hawks could not come up with the equalizer.

Truman out-shot RU 16-14 on the day, including 7-3 on goal, with five shots coming from Williams and three apiece off the feet of Lockett and Heffernan. Sophomore Kate Mattingly made two saves in goal for the Bulldogs, who moved to 3-0 in GLVC quarterfinal contests since joining the league in 2013. All three victories have been by one goal at home, including a 2-1 win against William Jewell in 2013 and a 1-0 win against Drury last season.

With the win, the No. 2 Bulldogs will head to top-seeded Bellarmine – a 2-1 double overtime winner against McKendree on Sunday – for semifinal and championship action next Friday (Nov. 6) and Sunday (Nov. 8) in Louisville, Ky. Truman will face No. 3 seed Quincy for the second time in as many weeks, as the Lady Hawks picked up a 4-0 home win against Lewis on Sunday.

Additional Notes:
  • Truman finished the home portion of the 2015 season with an 8-1-2 record. That gives the Bulldogs a combined 24-2-4 record in Kirksville during the last three seasons. Truman is 21-1-4 against GLVC opponents at home during that time.
  • Senior Alexis Heffernan moved into a tie for ninth-place on Truman's all-time career points chart on Sunday, as her two assists gave her 63 for her four-year career. She is tied with Olivia Hayes (2009-12) and is two back of Jill Benson (1994-97) for eighth-place all-time.
  • The Bulldogs moved to 12-2-2 all-time against Rockhurst, with a pair of 2-1 home victories against the Hawks this season.
