Gregg Williams To Be Enshrined Into Missouri Sports Hall Of Fame

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Truman Alumnus Gregg Williams will be enshrined into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on January 31. Williams was a quarterback for the Bulldog Football team and a two-time all-conference baseball player during his collegiate years.

Williams is currently in his second season as defensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams. He has been a coach in the NFL for 25 years, 14 as a defensive coordinator and three years as a head coach. Williams has been a part of two Super Bowls, on the winning side in 2010 as the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and falling a yard short in the 2000 Super Bowl as a coach for the Tennessee Titans against the Rams.

At Truman, Williams was a three-year letterwinner for the Bulldog Football program. He played his first three years under Head Coach Ron Taylor and his senior season for Bruce Craddock. The Bulldogs were a run-heavy offensive team during Williams' tenure with Mike Harris winning the NCAA Division II rushing title in 1978 with nearly 1,600 yards on the ground. Williams completed nearly 40 passes in three seasons with a pair of touchdowns.

He lettered two years for Coach Sam Nugent and the Bulldog Baseball team. He was named second-team all-Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 1979 after hitting .305 in 19 games. In 1980, he led the team in batting with a .275 average and earned honorable mention all-MIAA as a first baseman.

Williams, a native of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, would go on to earn his master's degree at the University of Central Missouri before entering the coaching ranks.

He has established The Gregg Williams Foundation that has raised millions of dollars for youths in Excelsior Springs and is a regular attendant at the Bulldog Football Golf Outing in St. Louis.

Williams joins Don Faurot, Maurice "Red" Wade, Russ Sloan, Dr. John Bailey, Gerald "Shag" Grossnickle and Shane Cavanah with individual Truman connections into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
