Men's Tennis Opens Season At Western Illinois

Singles Draw | Doubles Draw

MACOMB, Ill.  – Freshman Gavin Hatter placed second and two Bulldog doubles teams came away with two wins apiece as Truman Men's Tennis opened the season at the Art Peterson Invitational hosted by Western Illinois University.

Hatter, playing in the number four singles draw in his Bulldog debut, was a straight set winner against WIU's Nolan Jones (6-3, 6-2). He then knocked off GLVC rival Ransom Braaten from Lewis (Ill.) 6-1, 6-3 to play in the championship match on Saturday. Facing Lindenwood's Johannes Rabenhorst, Hatter lost the first set 6-4 but forced a tie break by taking set two by an identical 6-4 score. In the finale, Rabenhorst pulled away for a 10-4 victory to claim the match.

Hatter teamed with Matt Peterson in the number two doubles bracket to win third place. The duo won their opener by default and fell 8-6 in the semis to Lewis' Brendan Peterson and Andre Norasith. In the third place match, Hatter and Peterson knocked off Quincy's Chris Bueler and Ryan McMillan 9-7.

Truman's top doubles team of Paul Province and Ryan Bunselmeyer won their final two matches to take the consolation draw of number one doubles. They lost 8-1 in their opener but knocked off Quincy's top team 8-6 then Western Illinois tandem 8-2 for the win.

Travis Hopkins and Brian LaValle each advanced to their respective semifinals before falling in their final two matches.

The Bulldogs will host Lindenwood (Mo.) on Wednesday in the only home dual of the fall season. The women will join the men with the action starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Truman Tennis Court.
