EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Truman volleyball was able to pull off the upset of No. 15 Lewis on Saturday in the GLVC Tournament semifinals and the major reason was another big day from
Kayla Bastian and
Jasmine Brown. Bastian tied the match high with 19 kills while hitting .340 and Brown had 13 kills of her own.
With the five-set win, the Bulldogs improved to 17-16 and are above the .500 mark for the first time this season while the Flyers are now 25-7 with an NCAA Tournament bid coming on Monday in the Division II Selection show. Truman avenged a 3-0 loss to then-No. 18 Lewis on Nov. 4 in Romeoville, Ill. and will now look for an automatic bid when it plays against either No. 21 Rockhurst or McKendree on Sunday at noon.
Savvy Hughes (pictured) racked up a career high 54 assists and has reached the 50-assist plateau twice in the last three matches. Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by
Natalie Brimeyer (six blocks) as well as five players with at least 10 digs including Hughes (17),
Claire Wandrey (17), Bastian (15),
Lauren Wacker (15), and
Meghan Gasper (10). Bastian and Hughes are now responsible for 14 and 15 double-doubles, respectively, this year.
In the first set, Truman struck first and never surrendered its advantage with a lead as big as six (18-12, 19-13, 20-14, and 21-15). With that being said, there was plenty of resistance from Lewis as the Flyers eventually tied things up at 21-21 thanks to a 6-0 run. The Bulldogs responded nicely, though, and scored four of the final six points to take the set and a 1-0 match lead.
It was much of the same for the second set as Truman was up 4-0 right away and led by as many as six, 17-11, before Lewis began to make a charge. After that point, the Flyers used an 11-4 spurt to take their first lead of the period, 22-21. After a kill from Brown knotted things up, Lewis tallied the final three points to even the match up at one set apiece.
The third set was the tightest one of the afternoon as it saw a combined nine ties and six lead changes. Neither team led by more than three for the duration of the set and 27 points in, Truman was ahead 15-12. However, Lewis then scored seven of the next eight points to go up three, 19-16. From then on, the Bulldogs outscored the Flyers 13-8 and were ahead two sets to one.
In the fourth, Lewis won with the widest margin of any of the sets, 25-18, and the showdown would be decided in the fifth set. Truman saved its best for last with a match high .357 hitting percentage in that period on 12 kills and only two errors on 28 swings. The Flyers only lead was 1-0 before the Bulldogs went ahead 3-1 and never looked back. The closest Lewis could get was one on three different occasions.
Sunday, the program will look for its second conference title against either the Hawks or Bearcats with first serve set for noon from the EastSide Centre in East Peoria. Live stats and GLVCSN's coverage will be available right here at TrumanBulldogs.com.
