Bulldogs Bolt Past Tritons in Second Half to Advance in GLVC Tournament

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman State University men's basketball team shot 68 percent in the second half, hitting 17-of-25 from the floor to rally past the University of Missouri-St. Louis in an opening round game of the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference men's basketball tournament on Sunday afternoon in Pershing Arena.

The Bulldogs, who with their fourth straight win improve to 21-8 on the season, will see a familiar foe in the quarterfinal round on Friday, as Truman will battle the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for the second straight year in the GLVC tournament quarterfinals. The Bulldogs and Rangers will meet up on Friday inside St. Charles, Mo.'s Family Arena, with a start time still to be announced by the league office.

Truman trailed for nearly the entire first half but never let the visiting Tritons (12-16) move ahead by more than two possessions – leading by at most, six, with 7:58 to play in the half. However, after trailing 40-35 with 1:49 left in the opening frame, Truman got a pair of free throws from junior Kyle Kanaskie and a buzzer-beating lay-up by junior Billy Daniel to trail by just one, 40-39, at the intermission. The Bulldogs then took the first two possessions of the second half to get a three-pointer and a lay-up by Kanaskie and push the break-spanning run to 9-0 and lead 44-40.

UMSL would pull even once more at 54-all, but a quick 8-0 blast by Truman was punctuated by back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Jake Velky and redshirt senior Andrew Vander Zwaag to take a 62-54 lead with 10:58 to go in the game. The lead would reach as many as 10 on a lay-up by redshirt junior Dwight Sistrunk, Jr., before the Tritons battled back and sliced Truman's lead to just three, 73-70, with 5:47 to play. However, Kanaskie would answer right away with a basket, and the lead quickly ballooned back to three possessions with less than five minutes on the clock.

From there, Truman kept the Tritons at bay from the foul line, eventually holding on for the 90-84 victory.

Five Bulldogs finished in double-figures on an afternoon in which the purple and white hit 32-of-53 (60.4%) from the floor, including 9-of-20 (45.0%) from three-point range. Senior Cole Myers led all Bulldogs with 19 points – 12 of which came in the first half – with Kanaskie scoring 12 in the second half to finish with 16 points. Sistrunk, Jr., added 14 points and career-highs both in assists (8) and steals (4), while Daniel (13), and Vander Zwaag (10) also hit the double-figure mark. Redshirt junior Cory Myers finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds, as Truman out-rebounded UMSL 32-25 for the game, including allowing the Tritons just three offensive rebounds.

Truman finished with 19 assists on its 32 made buckets, and committed just six turnovers while accumulating seven steals.
