EAST PEORIA, Ill. - - The Truman State University softball team will have to battle out of the consolation bracket for a chance at a conference tournament title, as the Bulldogs split day one action at the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament at the EastSide Centre.

No. 5 seeded Truman (29-17) opened the day with a 6-1 victory against No. 4 seed Maryville before falling 2-0 to top-seeded Indianapolis in the finale. The Bulldogs will square off against sixth-seeded Bellarmine at 11 a.m. on Saturday (April 30) morning in an elimination game.

Maryville Recap
Senior Cate Simon hit two home runs and totaled five RBI, while senior Kindra Henze held a high-powered Maryville offense to just one run in a complete game, as the Truman softball team kicked off the GLVC tournament with a 6-1 opening-round win.

The Bulldogs put up a four-spot in the fourth behind a solo home run by GLVC Freshman of the Year Christa Reisinger and a three-run bomb by Simon to take a 4-0 lead. Maryville would rally with a solo shot in the bottom half, before Simon again went yard in the top of the sixth – a two-run shot – for her 11th of the year and 36th of her four-year Truman career.

That would be more than enough run support for GLVC first-team pitcher Henze, who scattered eight hits over seven innings while striking out five and walking just one. She improved to 11-7 on the year with the victory.

Indianapolis Recap
The tournament's top seed and nation's No. 2 overall program put up single runs in the third and fifth innings to deal Truman a 2-0 setback in the winner's bracket semifinals on Friday afternoon.

UIndy got a leadoff solo home run in the top of the third and then added a one-out RBI single in the top of the fifth for the game's only scoring. The Bulldogs left one runner on base put couldn't put any offense together against UIndy starter Morgan Foley, who was named the league's Pitcher of the Year earlier this week.

Senior Kelsea Dorsey started and took the loss with 2.2 innings of work, allowing one earned run, before Kindra Henze closed the action with 4.1 innings of relief with no earned runs allowed.
