Women's Basketball Picked Second In GLVC West

INDIANAPOLIS – The Truman Women's Basketball team was picked second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division as the league announced the annual preseason coaches' poll on Wednesday.

With the closing of Saint Joseph's College this past spring, the league switched to three, five-team divisions (East, Central & West) instead of two, eight-team divisions that were in place the previous seasons.  Teams will play home and home against teams within their divisions and play the other 10 teams once for 17 GLVC games.

The top-eight teams with the most points derived from the new GLVC Point Rating System at the end of the regular season will earn a berth to the GLVC Basketball Championship Tournament on March 1-4 at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Illinois.

The Bulldogs garnered 52 points and one first place vote in the West that was topped by Drury University with 66 points and 13 first place votes. Following Truman was Rockhurst (47 points), William Jewell (32) and Missouri S&T (23 with one first place vote).

Southern Indiana was the number one team in the East (Southern Indiana, Lewis, Bellarmine, Indianapolis, UW-Parkside) and Maryville was voted number one in the Central (Maryville, Missouri-St. Louis, Illinois Springfield, McKendree, Quincy).

The Bulldogs will play an exhibition game at Drake University on Sunday at 2 p.m. and open up the regular season at home on Saturday, November 11 against Missouri Valley College at 5:30 p.m.  The first conference game will be December 2 at home against the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Four of five starters return from last year's team that went 15-13 overall and 10-8 in conference. In addition, Head Coach Amy Eagan has added to the lineup, Rachel Steinhoff and senior transfer Remy Davenport. Steinhoff played only five games last year but had started 56 of 61 games her first two years and averaged 6.5 points and 2.3 assists per game.

Davenport is a transfer from the University of Nebraska-Omaha where she nearly rewrote the Maverick record book for three-point shooting. Davenport started 78 of 89 games for UNO and scored 838 points with 194 three-pointers. She left UNO third on a career triples list and set a school record with 10 in a game as a sophomore.

Starters from last year returning are redshirt junior guard Brooke Bailey, sophomore guard Sloane Totta, junior forward Rachel Edmundson and senior forward Ashley Hartwig.

Bailey averaged 9.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and led the team in minutes per game at over 30. Totta was the assists leader with 81 in 28 games, scored 7.4 points per game and was named to the GLVC All-Freshman team. Edmundson was a second team all-GLVC player last year averaging 12.3 points a night and shooting 37% from beyond the arc and 76% from the foul line. Hartwig scored over 10 points per game and is the top returning rebounder at 5.8 per game and free throw shooter at 80%.

Other returners include seniors Sam Andrews, Montira Mosby, Jamie Gleeson, Kennedy Martin, junior Mackenzie Jerks and sophomores Maddie Tharp, Taylor Koper and Eleanor Lueke.

In addition to Remy Davenport, newcomers include her younger sister Tiffany Davenport, forwards Maddie Re, Maya Mouton and Katie Jaseckas. Davenport was a three-point shooter from Blue Springs South, Re broke school records in rebounding at Bay Port High School in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Mouton averaged a double-double and added 3.4 blocks per game for Columbia Battle High School and Jaseckas was a member of two Illinois State championship teams, set a new school record in rebounds and second in blocked shots at Benet Academy.
