EAST PEORIA, Ill. - After just one run on five hits in a 4-1 loss to McKendree in game one of the GLVC Tournament, the bats came to life for Truman softball in the day's nightcap against William Jewell. The Bulldogs broke out for seven runs on 12 hits to roll past the Cardinals, 7-0, and improved to 15-2 in the all-time series.
Truman ascended to 36-20 overall and will live to fight another day when it takes on Rockhurst (31-21) on Friday with first pitch set for 11 a.m. The Bulldogs and Hawks split their doubleheader during the regular season in Kirksville back on Saturday, April 15. Meanwhile, William Jewell's 2017 campaign comes to a close with an overall mark of 25-27.
For the Purple and White in their second game of the day,
Christa Reisinger led the way with three hits in her four at-bats (3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI) while
Lex Van Nostrand (2-for-4 with one run, three RBI and a three-run home run) and
Valerie Schmidt (2-for-4) were each responsible for two base knocks.
Neither team was able to bring a run in until the top of the third when Van Nostrand went yard for the 12th time this season and 31st of her career. The very next inning,
Haley Wells brought in
Ashley Murphy with a sacrifice fly to center, Reisinger doubled in
Jamie Fowle and
Morgan McMahan pushed two across with a single to center. Those seven runs were more than enough for
Nicolette Simpson and
Lauren Dale (18-7) who combined for the win.
Simpson went the first three and a third frames with four hits surrendered and one strikeout while Dale gave up only one hit in three and two-thirds to go with a pair of punchouts.
As mentioned above, Truman and Rockhurst will square off on Friday at 11 a.m. Live stats and GLVCSN coverage will once again be available right here at TrumanBulldogs.com.
