KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman wrestling team capped off another weekend of action by competing against Missouri Valley College in a dual meet on Saturday and then taking part in the Roger Denker Open at the University of Central Missouri.
In the dual with the Vikings to open up the weekend, Truman fell behind 12-0 on a pair of pin fall losses. Alex Maus cut the deficit in half with a pin over Brian Bitney in the 141-pound match at the 1:49 mark.
Ryan Maus had to leave the mat on an injury default in the next bout to make the score 18-6.
Devon Fenstermaker got three points back with takedowns in the first and second period en route to a 7-2 win at 157.
Zach Hayes got the next three points for the Bulldogs at 174 with a third period escape for a 2-1 win.
In a match-up of former Kirksville Tiger wrestlers, it was the all-American Jesse Alter for the Vikings prevailing over Truman freshman Helmut Rentschler by a 13-2 score.
On Sunday, Warren Galloway was the only Bulldog to place at the Denker Open as he rallied with two pinfall victories after moving to the wrestlebacks. Galloway pinned Brandon Vukas and Dustin Hackett but lost by fall early in the second period in the consolation semis. Galloway lost to Darnell Bortz in the fifth place match 8-4.
Alex Maus had three wins in the open at the 141-pound bracket as did Fenstermaker in the 157.
Wrestling unattached, Colton Schmitz finished fourth in the 165-pound bracket.
Truman will take the same drive next weekend as they will return to Marshall for the Missouri Valley Invitational before going to Warrensburg on Sunday for the UCM Duals.
