Bulldogs Clip #14 Lady Hawks in Regular Season Finale

KIRKSVILLE - - Senior Alexis Heffernan and junior Stephanie Williams each scored, and sophomore Katie Mattingly picked up shutout No. 10 on the season to help propel the Truman women's soccer team into the postseason with a 2-0 victory against No. 14 Quincy on Wednesday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Park.

Both of Truman's (12-2-4, 11-1-3 GLVC) goals started from distance, as Heffernan received a long pass from fellow senior Megan Frkovic in the 22nd minute and converted as she was falling down for her team-leading seventh goal of 2015. Later, with just more than seven minutes to play, Williams found herself on the end of a long ball by another junior, Casey Maloney, and slipped a shot under the body of the QU keeper for her fourth goal on the year.

After the 14th-ranked Lady Hawks (12-3-3, 9-3-3 GLVC) out-shot Truman 8-3 in the first half, the Bulldogs flipped the script and out-did QU 6-4 in the final 45 minutes with the wind at its back. Quincy took five corner kicks to Truman's three; however, all five came in the first half – with the wind – for the Lady Hawks.

Mattingly, meanwhile, took her goals-against average down to 0.54 and made three saves to earn her 10th shutout of the season. She made stops on QU shots on goal in the 73rd, 79th, and 90th minutes.

In addition to the game on Wednesday, the NCAA also released its latest set of regional rankings, in which Truman saw itself move up one spot to No. 4 after debuting at No. 5 last week. The Bulldogs flipped places with Missouri-St. Louis – who also picked up another loss on Wednesday afternoon to Maryville – but sit behind the same top-3 of Grand Valley (Mich.) State, Bellarmine, and Quincy. Truman's season-opening opponent, Ferris (Mich.) State, moved up to No. 6, followed by Ashland (Ohio), Drury, Davis & Elkins (W. Va.), and Cedarville (Ohio). The top-six teams, which will include automatic spots for the conference champions of the GLVC, GLIAC, and GMAC, will advance to the 2015 NCAA Div. II postseason.

The Bulldogs will advance into the GLVC tournament as the No. 2 seed, as the purple and white finished the regular season a half-game behind Bellarmine for the regular season title. BU, Truman, Quincy, and UMSL will make up the top-four seeds and will host quarterfinal games on Sunday on campus sites. Truman's match, against an opponent to be determined later Wednesday evening, will take place at 12 p.m. in Kirksville on Sunday, Nov. 1. Admission will be $5 for all adults and any students at high school age or older. Truman students – with ID – will be admitted free, as will all students in eighth grade or younger.
