Women's Soccer Blanks William Jewell to Run Win Streak to Five

KIRKSVILLE - - On a day in which the program's all-time top goalkeeper was inducted into the Truman Athletics Hall of Fame, it was only fitting that the Truman women's soccer team posted a shutout – blanking William Jewell 1-0 to earn its fifth consecutive victory.

Quick Recap:
  • Final Score: Truman 1, William Jewell 0
  • Records: Truman (7-1-3, 6-0-2 GLVC) || William Jewell (4-5-2, 2-5-1 GLVC)
  • Scoring Summary: (31:07) – TSU – Alexis Heffernan

Match Breakdown:
  • Not many good chances for either team materialized early, so in the 32nd minute, senior Alexis Heffernan took it upon herself to create. The midfielder swiped a pass, dribbled through three defenders and scored an unassisted goal – giving her four on the season and 23 for her career to put Truman on top, 1-0.
  • Truman out-shot WJC 5-0 in the first half and 11-7 for the match, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • After not having to make a save in the first half, sophomore keeper Katie Mattingly did make two in the second half; however, both were from distance, as she logged her 10th career solo shutout and fourth of 2015.
  • The Bulldogs were on the Cardinal end line quite a bit, taking 10 corner kicks, including six in the second half.
  • Heffernan out-shot the Cardinals on her own, taking eight on the day, while senior Jessica Hanson added two and sophomore Kelsey Murphy added one.

Extra Notes:
  • Prior to the match, the Truman Athletic Department welcomed Emily Huyck (1998-2001) into its Hall of Fame. The Omaha, Neb.-native and current resident recorded a school record 43 shutouts and finished her career with a goals-against average of 0.45.
  • Heffernan's 23rd career goal puts her all alone in 10th place all-time on Truman's career goals scoring chart. She is one back of Olivia Hayes (2009-12) for 9th-place and two behind Trisha Shoemaker (2011-13) for 8th-place.
  • The Truman women have now won five straight for the first time since a 6-0 run from Sept. 22-Oct. 11, 2013.
  • The Bulldogs are all alone in second place in the GLVC after Sunday's results, sitting at 6-0-2 and just one game back of Bellarmine who is atop the ledger at 7-0-1. Missouri-St. Louis is one game behind Truman at 5-1-2, with the Tritons' lone loss coming at Truman's hands earlier this fall in St. Louis.
  • Truman is now 4-0 all-time against the Cardinals, with all four victories coming by one goal since the start of the 2013 season.

Up Next:
  • The Bulldogs will open up a four-match, two-weekend road trip this Friday (Oct. 9) at 5 p.m. in Rolla against Missouri S&T. The Lady Miners are 1-8-1 overall (0-7-1 GLVC) on the season.
