KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Overtime was needed for the second straight game against Missouri-St. Louis with the Truman Women prevailing 78-73 to move to 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
 
The Bulldogs won their second straight in conference and now are 12-6 overall. The Tritons fall to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the GLVC.
 
How It Happened:
  • In a prelude of things to come, the score at the end of the first quarter was tied at 17 apiece.
  • The Bulldogs broke out in the second and scored six of the first eight points to lead 25-19 while the Tritons picked up the first five fouls of the quarter.
  • Things evened up in the foul category and UMSL went on a 9-3 run to tie things at 28 apiece with 2:56 left in the half.
  • The Bulldogs scored the next seven with Courtney Strait tallying five of the seven. Truman led 37-31 at the break.
  • Truman push the lead out to eight following a basket by Ashley Hartwig. Kasey Gassensmith gave the Bulldogs a seven-point lead with 1:17 left in the third but Chelsey Jacox and a Jordan Fletcher free throw made the score 54-50 at the end of three.
  • Gassensmith's three-point play at the 8:19 mark gave Truman their only double-digit lead of the game at 61-51.
  • It was still a nine-point Bulldog advantage (66-57) following a pair of free throws by Hartwig at 6:17.
  • The Tritons used three balls from Jordan Boyce and Kelly Kunkel on back-to-back possessions and scored 10 of the next 12 to tie the game at 67 with 2:21 left in regulation.
  • Following a steal by Hartwig, Gassensmith floated the ball in to give Truman the lead back at 69-67.
  • UMSL forced two Bulldog turnovers in the back court, came away empty in the first but on the second Amber Daly knotted the score with 24 seconds left.
  • The Bulldogs had a chance to win in regulation when Rachel Steinhoff found Hartwig on the left block but the sophomore was fouled and could not convert on two free throws with 1.9 seconds left.
  • Hartwig rebounded and scored Truman's first points in the overtime and Strait knocked down two free throws to give Truman a four-point advantage early on.
  • The Bulldogs lost both post players Michalina Tomczak and Cassidy Clark to foul outs with 2:26 remaining and Truman up 73-69.
  • Kunkel pulled UMSL to within one at 74-73 with 1:17 to play.
  • An offensive rebound by Sam Andrews gave Rachel Steinhoff a second look and she took advantage with a hoop giving Truman a 76-73 lead with 29 seconds left.
  • Steinhoff would gather a defensive rebound following a missed layup by Shea O'Brien and Strait would convert on both free throws to seal the win.
 
 
Key Stats/Game Notes:
  • Five Truman players scored in double figures led by Strait's 18 points. Tomczak finished with 16, 12 apiece from Gassensmith and Steinhoff and 10 from Hartwig.
  • Strait moved to four points away from 1,000 for her career. She came into the game with 978. It was her 50th career double-digit game.
  • Her three-pointer, the Bulldogs only one of the night, moved her into sole possession of seventh all-time at Truman with 134. She passed former teammate Amy Briggs.
  • Jordan Fletcher led the Tritons with 21 points and nine rebounds. Kelly Kunkel added 18 as they were the only two UMSL players in double figures.
  • UMSL pounded the glass with 39 total rebounds to Truman's 25. It was the first time this season that Truman had been outrebounded by more than 10 and just the fourth time all season.
  • The Bulldogs made 27-of-40 free throws. The 40 attempted was the fifth most in a Truman single game and the 27 made entered the top 10 for single-game history.
  • Truman was 11-of-19 at the free throw line in the second half.
  • The Bulldogs shot 48.1% for the game while the Tritons were 42.9%. UMSL made four of 15 three-pointers and were 15-of-23 at the line.
  • The non-conference game this season was a double-overtime affair with the Tritons winning 61-60 on January 2nd.
  • The Bulldogs took a one-game lead in the overall series 18-17 and have won 10 of 16 games played in Kirksville all-time.
  • The win was the 50th for Truman Head Coach Amy Eagan on the Bulldog sideline.
  • Truman remained in a tie with Drury for second place in the GLVC West Division and one game behind Quincy University for first place.
 
 
Up Next:
The Bulldogs will host Maryville University on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Saints fell to Quincy 87-71 in their conference game on Thursday night.
