Game Stats (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Quarterback Jaden Barr had three rushing touchdowns as the Truman Bulldogs remained perfect in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 38-28 victory over rival Quincy on Saturday night at Stokes Stadium.

Barr scored on two straight possessions late in the first half as Truman grabbed control of the game. He rode the backs of the offensive line on fourth and one from the two and broke the plane of the endzone line to put Truman up 21-14 then after a Ben Chaney interception return scored from 12-yards out to send Truman into the locker room up 28-14.

The Hawks and more specifically receiver Eric Poindexter remained a thorn in the Truman defense. Poindexter earlier caught a five and then 60 yard TD pass in the first half then scampered 69 yards early in the third quarter to cut Truman's lead to 28-21.

The Bulldogs got a field goal by Danny Spencer to push the lead out to 10 in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Later, Jordan Salima ripped off a 34-yard touchdown run to put Truman up 38-21.

Poindexter finished off his remarkable game by running under another bomb from Robbie Kelley. Poindexter hauled in a 65-yard reception on third down to make it a 10-point game with 7:24 to play. He would catch six catches for 217 yards and accounted for all four touchdowns by Quincy.

Truman was able to grind out the fourth quarter clock, holding the ball for nearly 11 of the 15 minutes in the final stanza and 32 minutes of the game.

Senior Dalton Powell got Truman on the scoreboard first with his first collegiate touchdown reception in the first quarter. Powell snared an eight-yard pass from Barr at the 8:27 mark to put Truman up 7-0. The drive was set up after Mitch Nicholls got a piece of the punt and the ball netted only two yards from the previous line of scrimmage. It was the fifth punt block by Truman this season. Powell would later haul in a 33-yard pass from Barr.

Barr and Salima each had 72-yards rushing on the night and Truman grounded out 162 yards overall. Barr completed 13-of-30 for 159 yards but tossed a pair of interceptions.

Quincy had their turnover problems as well. Robbie Kelley threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns but had three ill-timed interceptions. Two of the three INTS occurred late in the first half, the first by Austin Zoda that was returned 32 yards and the second by Chaney returned 44 yards. Lawrence Woods got the final one with 2:08 left in the game to seal the victory.

The win kept Truman atop the GLVC race with two games remaining. The Bulldogs will play at Saint Joseph's (Ind.) next Saturday with a chance to grab a share of the league title. A win by Truman over the Pumas would give the Bulldogs their first GLVC title and first conference title since 1988. Kickoff from Rensselaer, Indiana is scheduled for noon.
