RECAP: Truman Falls To Grand Valley In Region Championship Match

Box Score (HTML)

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The #22-ranked Truman Women's Soccer team had their season come to an end on Friday night as #2 Grand Valley State got a pair of goals from Marti Corby to down the Bulldogs 2-0 in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship.

The nation's top offense put one of the nation's best defenses under duress from the outset. Truman keeper Katie Mattingly had to make two quality saves in the early going to keep the game scoreless.

In the 30th minute, Corby drilled a shot from 22 yards out that tucked inside the top of the far right post for the first goal of the match. That broke a Truman six-game shutout string with the last goal score coming on October 16. It was the eighth goal of the season for Corby.

Rain and wind picked up as the match progressed into the second half.

With 18 minutes left, a critical foul was called against Truman just outside the 18-yard box. The Bulldogs were called for obstruction as Truman's defender was trying to allow a through ball back to Mattingly but held up a Laker player just enough to draw the attention for the official. Corby was summoned to take the free kick and buried the ball again in the top right corner for a 2-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs kept fighting and got off a pair of shots in the late going but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Lakers to see their season come to a close.

Mattingly faced 18 shots and made five saves on the seven on goal while Truman had four shots, none on net.

The Lakers, the three-time defending NCAA Division II Champions, advance to the quarterfinal round on Sunday against either the University of Central Missouri or Fort Hays (Kan.) State.

Truman's season closes at 15-2-4, the 23rd straight winning campaign for the Bulldogs and only the third time they dropped two or fewer games in a season. The team set a new school record with 16 shutouts, surpassing the previous mark of 15 set in 2001 and 2004 and tied the record for fewest goals allowed in a season with seven.
