KIRKSVILLE, Mo. –The Truman Women's Basketball team survived an upset bid by William Jewell on Thursday night at home. Cassidy Clark's free throw with 2.6 seconds left gave the Bulldogs a 54-53 win over the Cardinals.

The victory kept the Bulldogs tied with Quincy University for second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division with 12-4 league records. The Lady Hawks survived their own upset bid by Rockhurst in Kansas City with Quincy winning 71-69. Truman will head to Rockhurst on Saturday while William Jewell returns home to host the Lady Hawks.

How It Happened:

  • The Cardinals closed the gap and trailed by only four at the end of the first quarter 20-16.
  • The second quarter would be a defensive battle. WJC would score only three points in the quarter with their only field goal coming at the 4:16 mark.

  • The Cardinals Maddie Nelson had five steals in the second quarter to keep the deficit at half to 11 at 30-19.
  • The third quarter saw Jewell double up the Bulldogs in field goals six to three and cut five points off the margin. Kasey Gassensmith's buzzer beater enabled Truman to lead 40-34 heading to the fourth.
  • Jewell whittled the lead down to two with 1:29 left to play. Both teams exchanged empty possessions until Ashley Hartwig went 2-of-2 from the line to give Truman 52-48 lead with 26.3 seconds left.
  • Kelsey Nickerson buried her third three-pointer to trim the lead to one with 19.1 seconds left.
  • Courtney Strait made 1-of-2 free throws but Maddie Nelson raced down the court to tie the game at 53 with 10 seconds left.
  • Brooke Bailey rifled a pass to Cassidy Clark on the block and Clark was fouled in the process of shooting with 2.6 seconds left.
  • Clark missed the first but got the second one to roll in for the one-point lead.
  • Jewell raced down the floor and Logan Antenen's 30-footer at the buzzer was blocked from behind by Strait.
