GLVC Recognizes Inaugural Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholars

GLVC Release

INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has identified 275 student-athletes who have earned the inaugural GLVC Brother James Gaffney, FSC Distinguished Scholar Award, as announced by the league on Wednesday. Among those 275 honorees, 45 of them repped the Purple and White during the 2016-17 academic year.

Named after Brother James Gaffney FSC, former president of Lewis University for over 27 years and two-term chair of the GLVC Council of Presidents, this award is presented annually to student-athletes who achieve a spotless 4.0 grade point average during the course of the academic year.

After seeing 114 students record a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2013-14 academic year, and 118 do so in 2014-15, a total of 179 individuals maintained an unblemished GPA in 2015-16 – a 52-percent increase – only to be enhanced by 54 percent this year.

GLVC Academic Awards Week will continue on Thursday with the Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award. Such an honor is bestowed upon student-athletes that have exhausted their eligibility in the intercollegiate sport in which they participated and maintained at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA through their academic year.
