RECAP: Truman Football Falls In Wild Finale 34-33 To Missouri S&T

Box Score (HTML)

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T erased a 14-point deficit in the second quarter then scored the go ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter to down the Truman Football team 34-33 in the season finale on Saturday.

The two teams traded touchdowns on their opening possessions with Tyler Swart running in from one yard out on the Miners' first possession and Jordan Salima answering for Truman with a 63-yard sprint two plays later.

Jaden Barr hit Dante Ruffin for a 34-yard strike to give Truman the lead at 14-7. Ben Styron hit a 23-yard field goal with 32 seconds left in the opening quarter to trim the lead to 14-10.

Barr later scrambled for a seven yard TD run and Josh Scheiderer entered his name into the Bulldog record book with a 34-yard field goal with 6:21 to play in the half. Scheiderer connected on his 15th made field goal of the season, tying the single season record set by Scott Bresaw in 1990 and again by Derek Koon in 2011. Truman was up 24-10 following the field goal.

Swart, one of the best passers in the GLVC, bolstered that resume on Saturday. Swart hit Justin Vaughn on a 48-yard laser after the Bulldogs went three and out and were backed up to their own 11.

On the next drive, the Miner defense sacked Barr twice and forced a punt with 2:42 remaining in the half. After having a TD toss of 32 yards waved off due to a flag, Swart picked up that yardage and then some on the next three completions to send the teams into the locker room tied at 24.

A bad snap on a punt by S&T resulted in a safety by the Bulldogs to open the third quarter scoring. Following the safety punt, Truman marched 59 yards on eight plays with Barr and Ruffin hooking up for a 17-yard touchdown and a 33-24 Bulldog advantage.

A 47-yard kick return by Aundray Henely gave S&T valuable field position and Styron had to hit a 39-yard field goal to close the gap to 33-27.

Early in the fourth, Swart engineered an 11-play, 71-yard drive that was capped on two straight 11-yard passes to Braxton Graham for the go ahead score.

Truman went three and out on their next drive. S&T got to the Bulldog 19 but Lawrence Woods got a huge sack on third down and Styron missed the ensuing 45-yard field goal attempt to keep it a one-point game.

The Bulldogs last drive started at their own 28. Barr scrambled for 11 yards on third and 10 to get the ball to the Bulldog 39 but faced a fourth down and 15 after taking his fifth sack of the day. Barr's desperation throw was picked off by Stefan Camplin to secure second place in the GLVC for the Miners.

The S&T defense bottled Barr up all day. He was sacked five times and had negative two yards rushing on 12 attempts. His longest run was the 11-yard scramble in the final drive. He was 10-of-18 for 122 yards passing.

Salima had 63 of his 92 yards on that first touchdown of the game and Andy Satulla had 62 yards on four rushes with a long of 38 playing his final collegiate game in his hometown of Rolla.

Swart blistered Truman for 381 yards on 30 completions and three touchdowns. Graham nabbed 11 balls for 126 yards and Logan Armontrout had seven catches for 81 yards. The Miners finished with a 420-302 advantage in total offense.

The Bulldogs end their season 6-5 and 5-2 in the GLVC while S&T improves to 9-2 and 6-1 in the league. Truman lost their first four games before reeling off six-straight wins for the first time since the 1998 season, however the two-game losing streak at the end kept them from winning a conference title.
