RECAP: Truman Wins Homecoming Thriller 41-39

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Josh Scheiderer booted a 28-yard field goal with seven seconds left to turn frustration into excitement and give the Truman Football team a 41-39 homecoming win over Missouri S&T on Saturday afternoon.

The Miners had taken their first lead of the game on the previous possession and erased a 10-point fourth quarter deficit. The Bulldogs were up 38-32 but a fumble at midfield gave the ball to the Miners with 3:24 left to play.

They quickly swept down the field with a 38-yard pass from Brennan Simms to Breon Michel followed by a 13-yard run by Deshawn Jones to give S&T a 39-38 lead with 2:30 left.

Jaden Barr picked up a first down on third and five with the drive starting at Truman's 25. Then on the next play was sacked for eight yards but following the play, S&T's Bryce Stevenson was flagged for taunting the Truman sideline giving the Bulldogs a fresh set of downs and putting the ball at the 46.

On third and 10, Barr eluded tacklers and escaped for the necessary yardage and nabbed the first down.  He hit Ian Ronan for 11 yards on the next play and later a holding foul moved the ball to the S&T nine. Following the final timeouts by each team, Scheiderer got the winner off and through the uprights from 28 yards away.

Barr completed 26-of-38 for a season high 272 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 107 yards with a 69-yard scoring touchdown in the third quarter to make it 35-25. Spencer Newell caught eight passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns, including a 50-yarder early in the third quarter.

Truman ran for 189 yards and had 461 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs were 9-of-14 on third downs and added 131 yards on five kickoff returns.

Reed McBroom and Travis Myerson had 11 and 10 stops respectively with Myerson picking up a second half interception. Sam Reeves had two of Truman's four sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Simms tossed the ball for 261 yards on 22 completions with Deshawn Jones running for 89 yards and three TDs. Jones broke off a 53-yard run on the first play of the second quarter to tie the game at seven.

Truman will take a 6-1 record and 2-1 conference mark to William Jewell next Saturday for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
