KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Truman State's Maria McGonegle matched a pair of "high-profile" single-game records on Saturday but in the end the William Jewell Cardinals grabbed both ends of the conference doubleheader by scores of 12-3 and 14-9.
McGonegle launched three home runs, including a grand slam to account for eight of the Bulldogs nine runs in game two. The three home runs and eight RBIs ties Truman State Hall of Famer Kristi Bredbenner's April 7, 2000 single game record against Emporia State.
The Bulldogs non-conference doubleheader that was already postponed with Missouri Western earlier in the week has now been cancelled. Truman will close out the regular season on the road next weekend at Southwest Baptist on Saturday and Rockhurst on Sunday.
Game 1: William Jewell 12, Truman State 3
The Bulldogs had to battle from behind from the get-go as Jewell scored five times in the top of the first and cruised to a 12-3 win in the opener. A two-run double was the key hit in the first by starting pitcher Kenzie Jones that made it 3-0.Â
The Cardinals added a run in the third before Truman plated a pair in their third. Callie Unrein uncorked her third home run of the season and Brieanna Klein brought home Kayla Quanstrum with an RBI single.
Jewell got that run right back in the fourth and added two more in the fifth and three in the seventh.
Quanstrum hit a ground-rule double in the seventh to score pinch runner Macy Taylor.
Game 2: William Jewell 14, Truman State 9
Each team exchanged runs in the first with Klein knocking an RBI single to score Quanstrum in the Bulldogs' half of the inning.
Jewell grabbed the lead on a single by Aly Manhart but the second runner was thrown out at the plate as Emma Walbert hit Taylor Spencer at home with a throw nailing Sabrina Olmo.
Walbert led off the inning with a single to center and Cameryn Patterson moved her up with a hit to left field. Klein loaded the bases with her second hit in as many at bats to bring up McGonegle.
The junior got off of the pitch and sent it over the left field fence for her third home run of the season to put Truman back in front 5-2.
The Cardinals came right back. A single and walk to start the fourth both ended up scoring to tie the game. Jewell added two more in the sixth, one on a home run by Aly Manhart.
McGonegle's next at bat was the same as her last. She line a shot over the left field fence that scored Patterson to square the game at seven each.
Jewell regained the lead in the sixth as they score two times and broke things open with five in the seventh.
McGonegle decided tie a single-game school record by belting her third home run of the game, scoring Klein in the process, in the seventh inning to cut the final margin down to 14-9.Â
