KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Hannah Belanger's only two points in the second half came at the most clutch time as the senior knocked down two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to give the Truman State women a 72-71 victory over Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs led by 10 at 63-53 with 8:25 to play on Ellie Weltha's three-pointer, the team's 11th of the game but the Tritons fought back.Â
Olivia Mean buried a three-pointer with 3:02 remaining to trim the lead to one at 69-68 and later Kiara Stewart made one of two free throws at the 1:37 mark to tie the game at 69.
The Bulldogs went back on top following a 1-for-2 trip to the line by Alex Fanning on the Bulldogs next possession.Â
Both teams came up empty on ensuing drives down the floor.
Amaya Blake picked Belanger's pocket on the offensive end and salted down the clock before Julys Stokes run up a left-handed runner to put UMSL in front 71-70 with 5.6 seconds left.
Out of the advancement timeout, Belanger took control and drove down the right side of the lane and was hacked with 2.1 seconds left to go to the line.Â
After scoring 19 in the first half but held in check in the second, Belanger calmly knocked down both free throws to give Truman the lead.
UMSL advanced the ball for a final shot but they would not get one off. The inbounds pass was fumbled and the clock ran out giving the Bulldogs the victory.Â
Belanger finished with 21, going 5-for-5 from outside. Weltha added 18 points and 11 rebounds and Gracie Stugart added 11 with six assists.
Stokes and Morgan Ramthun tied for game-high honors for the Tritons with 18 each. It matched Ramthun's season-high.
The Bulldogs are winners of eight of their last nine and will play at the University of Indianapolis next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (ET).
