Truman State softball kicks off a busy week for athletics, as they play six games in the Rosemont Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Ill.

Last week, the Bulldogs played their first games of the season, going 2-2. They lost to Southern Arkansas University and Northeastern State University, and defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State and Arkansas at Monticello.

Cassie Smith and Iowa State transfer Emily Wood are off to great starts. Smith went 4-7 over the weekend with a double, triple, and two RBIs. Wood went 3-7 with a double and the team's only home run so far.

Annabel Zimmer has been solid pitching, throwing seven innings and zero runs. She has seven strikeouts to only one walk, and. her opponents are batting .130 against her thus far.

Truman State Women's basketball plays their final two games of the 2022-23 regular season at Rockhurst and William Jewell.

The Bulldogs took a trip to Quincy last week and defeated the Hawks 67-51. Truman led by just two at 11-9 after the first quarter but outscored Quincy 21-10 in the second to seize control of the game. The Hawks made a little push in the third quarter, outscoring Truman 21-18 but the Bulldogs closed it out with a 17-11 fourth.

Hannah Belanger was 8-of-15 from the field for 20 points, with only two makes from distance. Ellie Weltha added 17 and grabbed 12 rebounds while Alex Fanning dumped in 12 points, had 10 boards and was also tops on the team with six assists. 

Quincy was led by Beth Mates Martin and 17 points, playing all 40 minutes.

Truman is 18-8 on the season and 14-4 in the GLVC.

Truman State Men's basketball also plays their last games of the regular season this Thursday and Saturday at Rockhurst and William Jewell.

The Truman State men just couldn't get over the hump as they fell to Quincy 83-75 last week. Trey Shearer led four Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points while the Hawks got 23 points from Malik Hardmon.

The Bulldogs fell behind by 14 points in the first half but clawed back to within five at 36-31 at the halftime break. 

Consecutive three-pointers by Shearer got Truman back to within two at 46-44 with 14:07 to play. From there, the Bulldogs were within two points eight times over the next seven minutes but just couldn't get the stop when needed or the bucket to go on top.

Hunter Strait's basket at the seven minute mark made it 64-62 but Hardmon knocked down a jump on the next Hawks possession pushed the lead to four. 

A scoring drought took place and it was the Hawks breaking it first with Mason Wujek putting back an offensive rebound to extend the lead to six. 

Quincy had 10 offensive rebounds and outscored Truman State 40-18 in points in the paint.

Shearer had four three-pointers and finished with 16, Strait and Dylan Peeters both had 12 and Xavier Hall added 11 with five rebounds and five steals.

The Bulldogs are 12-14 and 7-11 in the GLVC.

Bulldogs baseball looks to keep their hot start to the young season going against Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo.

Truman got off to a 3-1 last week against Kentucky Wesleyan, winning 8-6, 8-3, and 7-6. Their lone loss was 5-4 in extra innings.

Four Truman hitters are hitting over .300, with Tal Dean hitting .500 after 14 at bats. Dean has a double and four RBIs to his name, and his 1.182 OPS leads the team. Luke Turner is batting .333 with two doubles, Jack Darwin is also hitting .333 with a home run, and Dylan Thompson is hitting .308 with a double and a team-high five RBIs.

Holden Missey, Zachry Schneider, and Brian Bruxvoort have picked up wins on the mound.

Track Action Shot

Truman State track and field competes in the GLVC Indoor Championships hosted by UIndy this Saturday and Sunday.

Last week, the Bulldogs participated in the Hilltop Classic at Illinois College where several athletes found success.

Jacob Morris swept both throwing events and several Bulldogs once again improved on their personal bests at the Truman State Track & Field squads competed in the Hilltop Invite at Illinois College on Friday night.

Morris won the weight throw with a mark of 19.14 with Leithym Messer improving on his top distance in the event to 15.44 meters and grabbing fourth. In the shot put, Morris went 15.58 while Tyler Davis got the silver with a PR throw of 14.56 meters. Davis also had a season-best weight throw at 11.29.

Max Fuller shaved six seconds off his 3000 meter time with an eighth place finish in 9:28.38.

Kirsten Poole had the highest individual finish on the women's side with a fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. Poole ran a PR 9.18 in the event.

Molly Bies ran 2:29.25 in the 800 which was three seconds better than her previous best and Addison Walker set a PR in the 200 with a time of 28.59.

Jaylynn Martin had PRs in both her throwing events. She went 9.52 in the shot and 11.63 in the weight. Destiny Zimdars and Elaina Gorton both had PRs in the weight throw at 13.33 and 13.16 respectively.

Truman tennis plays two matches this week at College of Saint Mary (Neb.) and at Grand View.

The Bulldogs fell to Evangel 7-2 in their last match on February 10th. The Bulldogs fell 2-1 in doubles play with Samantha Seggerman and Julia Fangman winning 6-4 at the number two spot.

In singles action, Sydney Dial picked up a straight set win of 6-2, 6-0 at number five singles for the lone team point. Kennidy Shirey and Abbi Worster both won their first sets but were extended to a third set tie breaker before falling in each.
