ORLANDO - The Bulldog offense was clicking in the final day of the spring break trip in Florida as the Truman Softball team scored 21 runs on 24 hits but managed a split with a win over St. Michael's College and a loss to Alliance University following a two-hour rain delay on Monday.
Truman State ends their trip with a 4-4 record and will begin play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with doubleheaders scheduled on the road at Missouri S&T and Drury University this weekend.
Truman State 13, St. Michael's 1
Breianna Klein retired the first 15 batters on seven strikeouts and no walks and in the end the Bulldogs put away the Purple Knights in six innings by a 13-1 tally.
Truman used a four-run fourth inning to take command with all four runs scoring unearned. Emily Eberwine drew a leadoff walk to start the frame and after stealing second came in to score off an error. Klein helped her own cause with an RBI single and Callie Unrein and Macy Taylor followed with run scoring hits.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to six on a two run double by Mackenzie West and picked up another run off the bat of Lauren Stade in the fifth.
The game would be busted open in the sixth with six runs crossing the plate, two off a double by Alex Beard and two more by Unrein.
Attention turned to the circle to see if Klein could remain perfect. Unfortunately she hit the first batter she faced in the bottom of the sixth, then gave up a double to the next hitter. A one-out single ended her chance at consecutive shutouts.
Alliance 12, Truman State 8
While the Bulldogs outhit the Warrior 13-11, it was the 11 walks issued that proved costly for Truman State in the loss.
After giving up a run to AU in the first, the Bulldogs grabbed the lead on a two-run single by Alex Beard.
The Warriors got a two-out single in the second to knot things up and took the lead in the third off a wild pitch.
Four runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings ended up being too much to overcome for Truman.
Up 12-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth, Truman cut the lead down to six using a two-run single by Patterson, an error and a fielders choice during the at bat.
The Bulldogs added another in the sixth on a sac fly by Nina Fenasci that scored Madi McCarty.
Truman loaded the bases in their final chance and had the tying run in the on-deck circle with one out but could just get a fielder's choice run to score before the game ended.
The first four hitters for Truman (Cassie Smith, Fenasci, Patterson and Beard) went 9-of-14 during the game.Â
