KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman Softball team put a scare into #3 Indianapolis on Sunday but at the end of the day, the Greyhounds prevailed with a 2-1 and 11-7 victories on Senior Day.
The Bulldogs put up the most runs in a single-game against UIndy in game two since March 14th, a span of 24 games and scored the most runs in a GLVC doubleheader against the Greyhounds with eight.
Truman grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opener with Cali Coombs racing in on an inside pitch that eluded the catcher. The lead would hold until the top of the fifth when a one-out double tied the game. The Bulldogs intentionally walked the next batter but the next four pitches were outside the zone and the go ahead run scored on a walk.Â
Cassie Smith walked and moved into scoring position with a pair of stolen bases in the sixth but three straight strikeouts left her at third base.Â
The Greyhounds starter, Kenzee Smith, struck out five of the last six hitters to end the game and had 14 for the game.
Game two was scoreless until the third when UIndy knocked a two-run homer to take the lead but the Bulldogs fought right back.
The would score six times in the bottom of the inning. Sofia Birkenholtz drilled her third home run of the season and then Coombs doubled in a pair to put Truman on top 3-2. With two on and two outs, Brieanna Klein belted her first home run of the season over the fence in left to give the 'Dogs a 6-2 lead.
The Greyhounds were relentless as they came right back in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5.
They would push across two more in the fifth to retake the lead 7-6.
The Bulldogs did not back down. Smith started the fifth with a single and moved up on a stolen base and sacrifice bunt. Emily Woods laced a tying triple to left center field with one out. Standing a third base with two outs, the Bulldogs gambled and tried a delayed steal of home but the Greyhound defense was alert and caught Wood at the plate trying to steal home.
Emily O'Connor led off the sixth with her #17th home run of the season to break the tie and UIndy would add two more in the inning and another in the seventh to earn their 15th straight win.
Cassie Smith had four hits on the afternoon for the Bulldogs to go with three stolen bases. Wood had a single, double and triple in the two games and made a diving catch to rob runs in the first game.Â
The Bulldogs are two games out of a conference tournament bid with four remaining but all four games are against teams directly ahead of the squad. Truman will be at Maryville on Saturday and Missouri S&T on Sunday looking to crack the top eight and earn a spot in the tournament.Â
