INDIANAPOLIS - Immediate responses to Truman State scores, including an exchange of kickoff returns for touchdowns, kept the University of Indianapolis in front of the Bulldogs Saturday to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener 41-34.
Down 21-10 with five to play in the first half, Truman State's Jack Butchko took a Greyhound kickoff 96 yards to paydirt to get the 'Dogs to within four, but UINDY responded with a 96-yard touchdown of its own 14 seconds later to once again stretch the lead to 11, 28-17.
Truman State scored 10 unanswered points in the third, narrowing the lead to 31-27, when the 'Hounds put together a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive erasing the gains made by the Purple and White. A quick strike, two-play drive with Truman State's Dylan Hair connecting on a 63-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Overton at 3:28 again got the lead back to within four, but it proved to be as close as the Bulldogs would get as a 41-yard FG from UINDY's Ian Burr set score at the eventual final, 41-34, UINDY..
Jackson Overton hauled in six passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns through the air and scoring a third after recovering a Jack Butchko fumble at the goal line. Hair went 17-26 in the passing game for 246 yards and two TDs while Butchko finished with 155 yards on kickoff returns including the one return for a score.
The Bulldog defense struggled to contain UINDY's Gavin Sukup who went 24-34 for 319 yards and two scores, marking the second time in as many weeks Truman State has allowed a 300-yard passer.
Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State University plays host to the 'Dogs in a non-conference clash at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday, Sept. 21, in University Center, Mich., where Truman State will try to secure its first victory of the campaign.
