INDIANAPOLIS - After being run-ruled in game one, the Truman State Softball team exploded for six runs in their final at-bat in game two to earn a much-needed split against the University of Indianapolis on Friday.
The Greyhounds scored four runs in the second, one in the third, and five in the fourth to win 10-2 in game one. The Bulldogs' two runs came on a double by Cassie Smith and a throwing error that allowed Smith to score in the third inning.
Game two followed a similar pattern, with UIndy striking for four runs in the third and adding a fifth in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead.
Michaela Goad doubled in a run in the fifth, and Nina Fenasci followed with a run-scoring groundout as the Bulldogs chipped the lead down to 5-2.
The Greyhounds added what they thought was an insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run.
A leadoff walk in the seventh opened the gates for the Bulldogs. Smith and Fenasci both singled, with a run scoring to make it 6-3, bringing the tying run to the plate. Emily Wood delivered, blasting a three-run home run to tie the game at 6-6.
Avaree Taylor continued the momentum with a single to center, and a sacrifice bunt moved Taylor to third while Caragan Baker reached base.
Madi McCarty recorded the first out of the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Taylor, giving the Bulldogs the lead. Maddie Hickman singled up the middle to plate Baker for an insurance run.
Charlotte Chelich pitched the final three innings and struck out three hitters in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. Kaylyn Jones and Chelich combined for 11 UIndy strikeouts in the second game.
The win kept the Bulldogs at a 12-12 conference record and a one-game lead over ninth place in the standings heading into the final weekend of play. The Bulldogs will host Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis next weekend, looking to clinch their GLVC Tournament spot.
