Celebrating Title IX: The First Bulldog Leaders

As women’s athletics evolved after the passage of Title IX, Northeast/Truman had strong female leaders to make the transition from recreational/intramural sports to varsity/intercollegiate teams.

Austin led the then “Bulldogettes” to a 9-6 record in the 1972-73 season and 3-5 in the 1973-74 basketball season while on the volleyball court, Austin coached the first three matches of the first season in 1973.

Pam Wood followed Austin in both coaching duties as she led the Volleyball program in 1974 to a 3-4 record and coached basketball for two seasons cumulating in a 13-14 overall mark. Wood was also the head coach for women’s tennis in 1976.

JoAnn Weekley was the first softball coach and led the team from 1973-1978. She had a 46-49 record on the diamond and also was the school’s only field hockey coach. The team existed from 1970-1981 and played/shared the current field used by the Truman Baseball team.  Weekley coached women’s tennis in 1982.
