Truman State University head men's basketball coach Chris Foster has announced the hiring of Joe Barrer as the program's top assistant coach, beginning with the upcoming 2014-15 season.

Barrer (pronounced 'bear') comes to Truman after spending the past five seasons at Assumption High School in Davenport, Iowa, where he served as the head boy's basketball coach and dean of students. His squads posted a 91-34 record during his five years at the helm and reached three Iowa Class 3A state tournaments. He was named the 2011-12 Mississippi Athletic Conference coach of the year, as his squad compiled a 16-0 league mark.

"I am thrilled to have Coach Barrer joining our basketball program at Truman State University," Foster said. "I have gotten to know him throughout the past year and am very impressed with his knowledge of the game, people skills and tireless work ethic. Coach Barrer will be a great asset to our program and a great mentor for our players."

Prior to his stop at Assumption HS, Barrer was a head basketball coach at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and an assistant basketball coach at Brother Rice High School in Chicago. He jumped into the high school game following a four-year stint on staff as a graduate assistant and the Director of Basketball Operations at NCAA Div. I George Mason (Va.) University. Under head coach Jim Larranaga, Barrer helped lead the 2005-06 squad to a school record 27 wins, a CAA championship, and a trip to the NCAA Final Four.

"I am very grateful for this opportunity at Truman State University," Barrer said. "I look forward to working with coach Foster to develop successful teams and student-athletes both on and off the court. Coach Foster's vision for the program and Truman's reputation for attracting high-quality students make this a community that I look forward to joining."

Barrer has a Master's degree in Fitness and Health Promotion from GMU, along with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Saint Ambrose (Iowa) University. At SAU, he was a four-year member of the men's basketball team, helping the program win MCC championships in 2000, 2002, and 2003, along with advancing to the NAIA national tournament in 2000 and 2003.
