KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The William Jewell (Mo.) Cardinals scored 21 straight points and shocked the Truman (Mo.) Bulldogs 21-17 in front of a capacity Homecoming crowd on Saturday afternoon.
Kurt Loyd led the Bulldogs with a career-high 11 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs led 17-0 at the half after
Zach Tobin fired a 23-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to a wide open
Derek Hammann with 12 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Truman forced a three and out on the Cardinals first possession of the third quarter but then William Jewell found some momentum.
Quarterback Nick West scrambled out of trouble and shot putted a pass into the hands of Anthony Mullins, who scampered 65 yards down the sideline to the Truman 18. Thomas Cook took the next play 16 yards to the Bulldog two and Glen Whitney scored to make it 17-7. The Cardinals doubled their offensive output from the first half in just three plays, going 83 yards in 56 seconds.
West found Mullins for a 27-yard touchdown pass with just under three minutes to play in the quarter to swing the momentum completely on the side of the Cardinals.
The Bulldogs went backwards in their next possession forced to punt on three plays. The Cardinals marched down the field in 10 plays to take the lead on a 10-yard quarterback draw by West early in the fourth quarter.
Truman faced a fourth and two from the Jewell 33 and
Garrett White got the first with a 10-yard run however after a one-yard run by White, three straight incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs with over seven minutes left.
The Cardinals milked two minutes off the clock on three plays and punted the ball back to Truman with over five left.
Jacob Lamp caught the Cardinals napping as he ran 14 yards on fourth and 10 to keep the drive alive. Unfortunately, a pair of penalties drove the 'Dogs back and Lamp had to punt with 1:40 left to play.
Truman got the ball back one last time but
Devonte Black could not hook up with any receiver, turning the ball back over to the Cardinals, who took a knee to remain perfect in league-play.
The first half was all Truman with the Bulldogs taking a 7-0 lead on a pass from Black to Loyd for five yards in the back of the endzone and
Roger Howard added a 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter for a 10-0 advantage.
Following a 13-yard run by Black later in the second, Tobin came in relief and completed four straight passes with Hammann catching the Cardinals off guard with the 23-yard touchdown reception just before the break.
William Jewell was held to 70 yards of total offense in the first 30 minutes and finished with 262 for the game. West completed 17-of-26 for 208 yards with Mullins hauling in five for 135.
Black tossed for 130 yards on 17-of-38 with an interception. White finished below his season average with 20 rushes for 88 yards and Loyd set career-highs with 11 receptions for 80 yards.
The Cardinals registered six quarterback sacks and 11 tackles for loss on the day with Marquis Moye and Eric Jackson each with sacks two apiece.
Truman will look to get back on the winning track by hosting defending league champion, the University of Indianapolis (Ind.) next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Greyhounds are undefeated in two years of Great Lakes Valley Conference football.
