Box Score

Truman (Mo.) State University 17 (6-3; 5-2 GLVC)
Quincy (Ill.) University  14 (6-4; 4-3 GLVC)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Bulldogs scored touchdowns of 75 and 63 yards on consecutive offensive plays and Roger Howard's 23-yard field goal with 5:04 left to play gave the Bulldogs a 17-14 win over rival Quincy (Ill.) University on Saturday.

Garrett White went 75 yards in the second quarter to put Truman ahead 7-0 then following a defensive three and out, Jared Haferbier caught a pass and scored from 63 yards out to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead.

Quincy answered on their next possession with a time consuming five minute, 58 second drive that ended just before half with quarterback Nick Lonergan finding Owen Schoenenberger in the back of the endzone from 14 yards out to cut the lead in half.

The Bulldogs went three and out in their first two possessions of the third quarter and the Hawks took over at midfield. Facing a fourth down from the Truman 41, Chris Harris moved the chains with a three yard run. Harris scored his 16th rushing touchdown of the season later in the drive after Lonergan set up the redshirt freshman with a 21-yard scamper to tie the game at 14.

In the fourth, Truman took over at their own 40 and got some momentum going with three straight five-yard gains. From the Hawks' 36, Joey Schenck made a tough catch to gain 18 yards and Kurt Loyd moved the ball inside the 10 on a third and two.

Quincy sniffed out White in the backfield on first down and caught Zach Tobin from behind on second with Andrew Smikle forcing a fumble on the play and offensive lineman Brad Hardin saving the possession for Truman.  White got 10 yards back on a pass play to set up Howard's 23 yard field goal make.

The Truman defense answered the bell all day and after getting their longest break on the sidelines with the exception of halftime, came out firing on Quincy's next drive.

After the Hawks picked up a first down, three straight sacks by the defense forced the Hawks to punt from their own 15 with 2:18 left on the clock and two timeouts. Nick Reichert, Pablo Adame and Devin Gillespie were all in on the sacks as Truman got to Lonergan seven times on the day.

After the Hawks burned their two remaining timeouts, Tobin called his own number on a bootleg to pick up six yards and a first down to clinch the victory.

Tobin was efficient coming in relief of starter Devonte Black. He completed 15-of-19 passes for 160 yards. Black left the game in the first drive after being sacked. White caught five passes for 61 yards, Chico Orlando nabbed four for 21 and Haferbier caught three for 69.

Aided by the 75-yard touchdown run, White picked up his 10th career 100-yard rushing game with 103 yards on 14 carries.

The major storyline of the game was Truman's defense. Austin Zoda and Luke Lamar tied for game-high tackle honors with 12 each and the Bulldogs recorded seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss. Matthew Bell and Nic Abbate had two sacks apiece with Abbate becoming the all-time tackles for loss leader at Truman with four for 17 yards on the day. The defense made a total of 91 tackles and was on the field for over 36 minutes of game time.

Jacob Lamp had a big day punting for Truman being called upon seven times with an average of 42.3 with a long of 57 and a pair inside the 20.

Lonergan completed 19-of-25 passing for 191 yards with Schoenenberger catching five balls for 67 yards.  The Hawks averaged just 2.1 yards per carry as Dante Flowers, Chris Harris and Sterling Ross were held to under 30 yards apiece on 45 total rushing attempts.

Truman will battle Saint Joseph's (Ind.) College in the season finale next Saturday. A win by the Bulldogs would give them sole possession of second place in the GLVC while a loss could mean multiple ties, with including the Pumas. Kickoff from Rensselaer, Indiana is scheduled for noon.
