KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A second half push by the Truman Women's Basketball team came up short as they lost 72-64 to Maryville (Mo.) University on Saturday afternoon. Ashley Hartwig scored 15 of her career-high 17 points all in the second half for Truman.

Scoring woes plagued both teams to start the game but it was the Truman drought that proved costly. The Saints opened up a 7-0 lead at the 14:36 mark with the Bulldogs getting their first point on a free throw by Rachel Steinhoff at 11:39. Courtney Strait's three-pointer ten seconds later cut the deficit to just three points.

Hartwig's first bucket of the game pulled Truman to within one but the Saints responded with an 18-3 burst to take a commanded 25-9 lead. The Bulldogs nibbled away and got the margin back below 10 points but a 6-0 run to end the first half put Maryville up 35-22.

The Bulldogs made six field goals in the first half with five coming from beyond the arc for an overall shooting percentage of 17.6%.

The lead expanded out to 18 early in the second before Hartwig took over inside. She scored six straight points for Truman, then knocked down her first three-pointer of the season to bring the Bulldogs back to within six at 50-44 at the midway point of the half.

Rachel Steinhoff got an offensive rebound and put back to get the 'Dogs closer at 52-48 and following a pair of free throws by Maryville's Shelby Miller, Hartwig scored again off an offensive rebound by Steinhoff to keep Truman four back with under eight minutes to play.

Allie Norton hit from three after Maryville jumped back out by eight and Hartwig scored with 2:42 to play to trim the Saints' lead back to five at 62-57.

The Saints used the free throw line to extend their lead back out to 13 points in the final minute. Maryville was 26-of-31 from the line, including 11-of-13 in the second half.

Miller led all scorers with 27 points and eight rebounds in 35 minutes of work. Jordynn Martin added 17 and Jade Rogers notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Maryville shot 42% for the game.

Hartwig's career-high of 17 led Truman and she was joined in double-figures by Norton's 14 and Strait's 11. Norton jumped past former teammate Becka McHenry and Bulldog great Susan Theroff for 13th in all-time scoring in Truman history with 1,163 points.

Truman shot 33% for the game, 29% from three (9-of-31) and got to the line only 12 times, making seven. The Bulldogs grabbed 15 offensive boards but had seven second-chance points.

The team will look to bounce back when they host William Jewell (Mo.) College on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. The Cardinals knocked off #14 Drury (Mo.) University 80-64 and are 5-2 in the GLVC.
