Men's Basketball Recap: Truman 89, Rockhurst 65

KIRKSVILLE - - Making more three-pointers than regular field goals – all while connecting at a 47% rate from beyond the arc – will win a lot of basketball games, and the Truman men's squad took full advantage by dropping 17 triples in an 89-65 win against Rockhurst (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (14-5, 6-3 GLVC) were lights-out from long-range the entire afternoon, connecting on 17-of-36 (47.2%) of their three-point opportunities to earn their third straight victory in Pershing Arena. For the game, Truman shot 50.0% from the floor (33-for-66) and handed out 24 assists to just eight turnovers against the Hawks (5-12, 1-8 GLVC).

Truman trailed just once at 8-7 before an 11-0 blast put the 'Dogs on top, 18-8, with 12:41 to go in the opening half. From there, the lead dipped back into single-digits just once – moments later at 18-10 – before the Bulldogs stomped the accelerator and took a 16-point lead into the break at 43-27.

Out of the half, it was the Reed Mells show, as the senior scored Truman's first dozen out of the break to help push the Bulldog lead to 22 at 55-33. After shooting 8-of-20 from three-point range in the first 20 minutes, the Bulldogs fired a collective 9-of-16 (56.3%) in the second half – pushing the lead to as many as 33 with 7:51 to play.

Four Bulldogs finished in double-figures, with Seth Jackson's 16 pacing all players on the afternoon. The GLVC's leading scorer played just 25 minutes, hitting 6-of-12 from the floor and all four free throws to go alongside four rebounds and four assists. Mells finished with an identical 6-of-12 shooting effort – also pairing four rebounds and four assists – for 15 points in 25 minutes, while junior Andrew Vander Zwaag (12 points, five rebounds) and redshirt-sophomore Cory Myers (11 points, three rebounds, two steals) also led Truman.

Just six players combined to hit all 17 of Truman's three-pointers, which marked the second-highest total in program history – second only to an 18 three-point effort earlier this season against Faith Baptist (Iowa.). Truman drained 30 three-pointers in the past two games (13 on Thursday against William Jewell) and has topped the 10 triple mark in 11 of 19 games this season.

Rockhurst was led by Russell Burns' 11 points, while Dominique Washington added seven rebounds.

Jackson also moved into sixth on Truman's career scoring list with Saturday's effort, now sitting with 1,386 career points. He is 40 away from tying Jason Reinberg (1996-00) for fifth all-time at 1,426.

Truman hits the road to start a four-game road trip this Thursday night, visiting GLVC-West division leading Drury (13-4, 7-2 GLVC) at 8 p.m. in Springfield, Mo. The Panthers came back from 22 points down to defeat Missouri-St. Louis in overtime on Saturday afternoon in the Gateway City. Truman and UMSL are tied for second in the West at 6-3.
