Women's Soccer Caught in OT in Ranked Battle

LOUISVILLE - - The two ranked teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference battled into overtime on Sunday afternoon, but it was No. 13 Bellarmine that got the game-winner to snap No. 22 Truman's 12-match unbeaten streak with a 1-0 final score.

The Bulldogs, who did punch a ticket to the GLVC tournament when Maryville lost to McKendree, moved one game back of the Knights with three regular season matches to play. Truman is now 8-1-3 in league play (9-2-4 overall), while BU moves to 10-1-1 in the GLVC (13-1-1 overall).

After a nearly 30-minute delay due to an official's late arrival, the two teams got underway on the turf at O.B. Frazier Stadium, with the Knights having the stronger run of the play in the opening 45 minutes. Bellarmine out-shot Truman, 9-4, in the first half, forcing Bulldog keeper Katie Mattingly to make six saves. Midfielder Alexis Heffernan took two shots to lead the 'Dogs.

In the second half, however, Truman turned the tables – out-shooting BU 4-3 and picking up a pair of corner kicks – but could not find the game-winning goal in regulation.

Neither team had anything going in the first overtime, until the Knights came through in the fourth minute on a goal by Polly Marino. Her second goal of the season was scored from 18-yards out just inside the far post off an assist by Audrey Van Der Elst.

Heffernan ended up leading Truman's offense with four total shots (two on goal), while Mattingly posted eight saves in goal.

The Bulldogs return to Kirksville to start a three-match homestand next Friday (Oct. 23) at 2:30 p.m. against Illinois Springfield. The Prairie Stars are 5-8-1 overall (4-6-1 GLVC) after picking up a 0-0 home draw against Missouri-St. Louis (10-1-3, 8-1-3 GLVC) in Springfield on Sunday.
