Lockett Hat Trick, Cannon Milestone Highlight Women's Soccer Win

KIRKSVILLE. Mo. - -  Sophomore Allison Lockett notched the first Truman women's soccer hat trick in more than three years, and head coach Mike Cannon became just the eighth head coach in NCAA Div. II history to win 300 games, as the Bulldogs downed Illinois Springfield 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Park.

The Bulldogs (10-2-4, 9-1-3 GLVC) jumped all over the Prairie Stars in the opening 45 minutes, out-shooting UIS (5-9-2, 4-7-2 GLVC) by a 13-2 margin in the first half alone and putting a three-spot up on the scoreboard. Lockett, who had just two goals this season entering the day, got Truman on the board in the 14th minute when she finished a cross by Stephanie Williams to put the 'Dogs on top, 1-0. Then, in the 31st minute, Lockett struck again, as Megan Whitehead's cross ended up right in front of target for the sophomore's conversion and a 2-0 lead. Finally, in the 39th minute, Caitlyn Stephan was in the right place at the right time, as another Whitehead cross landed at the feet of the sophomore striker, who buried the chance and put Truman up 3-0 at the break.

Early in the second half, Megan Casserly carried the ball down the right side and slipped a pass to Williams, who, in turn, found Lockett unguarded at the left post for a tap home third goal of the day and a 4-0 Truman lead. Lockett's hat trick was the first by a Bulldog since current teammate Alexis Heffernan did so against Lindenwood on Oct. 7, 2012, as a freshman.

While the offense was clicking on all cylinders, the Bulldog defense clamped down and limited any UIS threats, as Truman closed the match by out-shooting the Prairie Stars 17-6 (10-2 on goal), as Katie Mattingly registered her eighth shutout of the 2015 campaign in net. She made two saves and lowered her season goals-against average to 0.61 with the win.

Cannon, meanwhile, became just the 44th coach in NCAA women's soccer history (all divisions) and just the eighth coach in NCAA Div. II women's soccer history to reach 300 career victories, as he improved his all-time career coaching record to 300-108-48 (.711). The team earned its 10th win of the season as well on Friday, marking the 21st consecutive season that the Bulldogs have won at least ten matches. Only UC-San Diego (29) has a streak longer than Truman's in all of NCAA Div. II.

The Bulldogs entered the day one game back of first-place Bellarmine in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings could clinch a GLVC tournament first-round home game as early as Friday night based on other results around the league. Truman will next face McKendree (7-5-3, 6-4-2) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Kirksville, with the Bearcats battling Quincy tonight.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early on Sunday, as the Bulldogs will recognize seniors Megan Frkovic, Jade Shinn, Taylor Park, Jessica Hanson, and Alexis Heffernan at 2:20 p.m. prior to kickoff.
