Women's Soccer Caps Weekend with 3-0 Shutout

KIRKSVILLE - - The Truman women's soccer team jumped all over visiting McKendree on Sunday afternoon, putting home three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 shutout of the Bearcats on Senior Day.

The Bulldogs (11-2-4, 10-1-3 GLVC) took little time getting an early lead, as in the fourth minute, junior Megan Casserly hit fellow junior Stephanie Williams with a pass on the left side. Williams took one look and saw McKendree keeper Taylor Zerbe far from goal and floated a kick past Zerbe's outstretched arms and into the net for a quick 1-0 lead. It was Williams' third goal of 2015.

Then, in the 22nd minute, Truman applied more pressure, and senior Alexis Heffernan was ripped down from behind in the box for a penalty. Sophomore Kelsey Murphy stepped to the dot and scored, giving the 'Dogs a 2-0 edge. Just four minutes before the halftime horn, Truman struck again, as a midfield free kick by senior Jessica Hanson was bobbled by Zerbe, and sophomore Danielle Beers scored off the loose ball to send Truman to the half on top, 3-0. It was the first goal of the season for both players.

The second half slowed down considerably, with the Bulldogs content to sit on a three-goal lead, and McKendree unable to get off many threats. Truman out-shot McK 19-12 overall and 9-5 on goal, as sophomore Katie Mattingly logged her ninth shutout of the season with her complete game, five-save effort.

The Bulldogs recognized their five-player senior class prior to kickoff, which included Heffernan, Hanson, Megan Frkovic, Taylor Park, and Jade Shinn.

Sunday's victory guaranteed Truman a top-four seed in next week's Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament, which comes with a first-round home game next Sunday (November 1) with start time TBA.

Bellarmine continues to hold a half-game lead on Truman with one game to play, while Wednesday's (Oct. 28) opponent, Quincy, sits one game back of the Bulldogs at 9-2-3 in league play. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Lady Hawks is slated for 2:30 p.m. in Kirksville at the Bulldog Soccer Park.
