Men's Soccer Earns Fifth Straight Home Victory

KIRKSVILLE - - It took a little bit of time, but the Truman men's soccer team finally cracked a defensive-minded McKendree squad on Sunday afternoon, as the Bulldogs put away two second half goals to shutout the Bearcats at Bulldog Soccer Park on Senior Day.

With McKendree (5-10, 5-9 GLVC) rarely sending more than one forward past the midfield line throughout much of the first half leaving 10 defenders behind, Truman (8-9, 7-7 GLVC) patiently waited for its first strike of the day. Early in the second half, redshirt freshman Joel Reft launched a 35-yard bomb from the center of the field that went off the crossbar right to a waiting Trevor Kaufmann standing at the six-yard box. The freshman collected the rebound and put home his team-leading fifth goal of the 2015 campaign in the 50th minute to stake Truman to a 1-0 lead.

Then, in the 81st minute, the Bulldogs purchased insurance when redshirt freshman Brian Kane's corner kick found the head of senior Matt McMillin, who sent a deflection off a Bearcat defender and in for his second goal of the season and a 2-0 lead on the day.

Truman would hold off the Bearcats down the wire to preserve a second straight shutout and fifth straight win at home, as the Bulldogs out-shot McK 20-8 on the day and 7-0 on goal. The Bulldogs also earned nine corner kicks to just one for the Bearcats, as sophomore Zac Suazo's quiet day in net came with a 90 minute shutout with no saves needed.

The Bulldogs recognized their four-man senior class prior to kickoff, which included McMillin, Corey Nolte, John Lee, and Jordan Verbanaz.

The victory also kept the purple and white alive for the final Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament spot, with the Bulldogs likely needing a win on Wednesday (Oct. 28) at home against Quincy (10-5-1, 9-4-1 GLVC) to potentially reach the eight-team conference tournament that begins next Sunday (Nov. 1) on campus sites. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at the Bulldog Soccer Park.
