Quincy Stuns Truman With Late Comeback

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy Hawks scored 17 points in the fourth quarter including the go ahead score with 1:55 remaining to defeat the Truman Bulldogs 23-19 on Saturday afternoon.

Truman jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter following a 21-yard TD pass from Randy Schroeder to Richard Neboh and a blocked punt that resulted in a safety.

The Hawks got a 31-yard touchdown pass from Nick Lonergan to Eric Poindexter in the second quarter to close the lead to 9-7.
Jordan Brown's second "Pick-Six" in three weeks gave Truman a 10-point lead early in the third quarter and Nick Dolezal connected from 40-yards out to make it 19-6 at the end of three.

De'Carlos Poole caught a 20-yard pass from Lonergan to cap off a seven-play, 78-yard drive in 1:53 to start the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 19-12.

Both defenses forced three and outs and Truman started an important drive deep in their own end with 8:30 left to play.  Schroeder completed a pair of passes to Neboh to move the chains twice then scrambled himself for a first down on third and eight. After a six-yard run on first down, two straight incompletions forced a Truman punt with 4:49 showing on the clock.

Lonergan faced a third and 10 early in the drive but hit Jake Braskett for 23 yards. The two connected on the next play for a gain of 16 to move the ball out to the Truman 45. Two consecutive flags on Quincy pushed them to a first and 25 but Lonergan rolled out and found Kody Wood for 27 yards to the Bulldog 33.

Two more first down plays moved the ball to the Truman five and Darius Burse powered up the middle for the game-tying score. Blake Allison converted the extra point and the Hawks took their first lead at 20-19 with 1:55 left.

Truman had all three timeouts but on the first play of the ensuing drive, Shane Barrett intercepted Schroeder and returned the ball to the Bulldog 26.

The 'Dog defense held Quincy out of the endzone forcing a 23-yard field goal by Allison with 1:16 left to keep Truman's hopes alive.

The Bulldogs managed just a 12-yard pass to Brass Woods before turning the ball over on downs and ending the game.
Quincy outgained the Bulldogs 434 to 193 and accumulated over 33 minutes of possession time.

Lonergan finished 23-of-39 for 289 yards and a pair of touchdown passes while throwing two interceptions and being sacked three times.
Chris Harris had 109 yards rushing on 23 carries with a long of 15.

Schroder was 18-of-34 for 154 yards and a TD. Joey Schenk and Felix Neboh each had over 50 yards receiving.
After averaging over 182 yards rushing on 40 attempts per game in the last three wins, Truman had 35 yards on the ground on 22 attempts. Andy Satulla had 26 yards on 10 rushes.

Game Notes:
  • The Bulldogs had 73 yards in interception returns. Jordan Brown picked off his third pass of his career and second this season. Both picks in 2015 have been for scores. D'Anthony Knight had the other interception for a 35-yard return. It was Knight's second career INT.
  • Justin Mikeworth led the Truman defense with nine total tackles.
  • Derek Hammann had a pair of punt returns for 19 yards (9.5/return with a long of 11) and had a season-long 38-yard kickoff return.
  • The Bulldogs had their first field goal blocked this season as Nick Dolezal's 39-yard attempt in the second quarter was blocked.
  • Quincy's Blake Allison's field goal with 1:16 left in the game was the first made FG this season for the Hawks.
  • Quincy ran the ball 39 times for 145 yards with quarterback Nick Lonergan added 29 yards on nine attempts in scrambles out of the pocket.
  • The 39 rushing yards by the Bulldogs were the fewest by a Truman team since September 13, 2008 when they gained just three in a three-point loss to Central Missouri. Truman threw for 405 yards that game, the last time the team hit that plateau.
  • The blocked punt for a safety was the first block on a punt since a 2013 game against William Jewell and first safety also since a 2013 game against Southwest Baptist.
  • That was the first win by Quincy over the Bulldogs since the two teams started playing conference games in 2013 and broke a four-game winning streak by the Bulldogs dating back to 2000. The only previous win by the Hawks over the Bulldogs was in 1951.
  • Both teams sit at 3-3 in GLVC play.
Up Next:
