Football Defeats Saint Joseph's 10-3

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Bulldog defense dominated Saint Joseph's on Saturday forcing three fourth quarter turnovers in Truman's 10-3 win over the Pumas for the fifth win of the season.

After the scoreless first quarter, Saint Joseph's started on their own 16 and marched down the field to the Bulldog 30. The Pumas gambled on fourth and five with quarterback Wade Burtron coming up a yard short being stopped by Austin Zoda for a turnover on downs.

Three big plays on the next drive by Truman led to the only touchdown of the game. On third and four, Randy Schroeder found Joey Schenk for 26 yards to move the ball past midfield. Next play was Aaron Hartfield with a 22 yard rush up the middle to the Pumas 21. C.J. Brown rumbled on a pass from Schroeder for 20 yards down to the one and Hartfield punched it in on the next play for the 7-0 lead.

Saint Joseph's got on the board with 4:40 left in the third quarter when Gavin Voss connected on a 41-yard field goal attempt to make it 7-3.

JD Hurd started the turnover barrage for the Bulldog defense when he picked off Burtron at the Bulldog five yard line early in the fourth quarter.  Burtron was trying to go deep but overthrew his receiver and Hurd caught it for his first pick of his career.

Truman's ensuing drive stalled following a 17-yard pass to Brass Woods but punter Brock Rohler was able to turn the field around when he belted a 52-yard punt to the Pumas 12 yard line. On the next play, Burtron's swing pass to tight end Addison Dellinger was complete but Kade Young forced a fumble that was recovered Nick Reichert at the 17.

The Bulldogs had first and goal from the four but had to settle for a 21-yard field goal by Nick Dolezal and a 10-3 lead with 6:31 to play.
Burtron then engineered the Pumas down the field getting a third down conversion by penalty. They moved into the redzone looking for the tying touchdown but Ben Wellman striped Burtron of the ball and recovered at the 26 ending the threat.

Hartfield led Truman with 88 yards rushing on 18 carries and Schroeder completed 18-of-33 passing for 173 yards. Schenck was the recipient of seven pass completions for 75 yards.

Burtron led SJC in both rushing and passing with 51 yards on the ground and 233 (34-of-43) through the air. Jose Esquivel caught 13 passes for 93 yards.

Truman had 16 tackles for loss for 53 yards. Ben Chaney, T.J. Fine and Kade Young all had double-digit tackles with Chaney, Fine, D'Anthony Knight and Devin Gillespie have multiple tackles for loss.

Joel Wimbley had 12 stops for the Pumas with two sacks and three tackles for loss.

Game Notes:
  • Truman had 253 yards of total offense while the Pumas had 335.
  • Saint Joseph's came into the game among the national leaders in turnover margin +12 and finished at -3 on the afternoon.
  • It was the first Truman game this season without a turnover.
  • Truman was 2-for-2 in redzone opprotuties and Saint Joseph's was 0-for-2.
  • Puma kicker Gavin Voss has accounted for all nine points, three field goals, Saint Joseph's has scored in the last two games played in Kirksville between these two teams.
  • The three points allowed by the Bulldogs was the fewest since they shutout Quincy on October 5, 2013.
  • The win by the Bulldogs was their first over Saint Joseph's in GLVC action and increased the series lead over the Pumas to 4-2.
Up Next:
The Bulldogs will close the 2015 season at home next Saturday against McKendree (Ill.) University. The Bearcats took down Quincy by a score of 56-30 and are 7-2 overall, 5-2 in the GLVC. Kickoff from Stokes Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
