Bulldogs Fall In Finale To McKendree 31-3

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Two second quarter touchdowns and some trickery helped McKendree (Ill.) University to a 31-3 victory over the Truman Bulldogs in the season finale at Stokes Stadium on Saturday. The Bulldogs finish the season 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

After a scoreless first quarter, Truman was forced to punt early in the second and into the stiff breeze. The Bearcats took over at midfield and used nine plays before Darius Crochrell was able to stretch across the goalline on third down following a pass from quarterback Isaac Fisher.

McKendree forced a three and out on the next Truman possession then used a wide receiver pass to find the endzone. Cameron James came in for a reverse but pulled up and launched a 32-yard strike to Girard Jenkins for the 14-0 lead.

The Bearcats were threating on their next possession having a first and goal at the three but Ben Chaney thwarted the drive with first interception of the season and third of his career in the back of the endzone.

The Bulldogs could not muster anything offensively as they punted on five of six possessions in the first half and their first one in the second.
Nick Dolezal's career long 43-yard field goal put Truman on the scoreboard with 5:30 left in the third quarter.

Looking to build on that momentum, Truman thought they had forced a three and out on the ensuing McKendree drive but punter Brendan Fred rumbled 29 yards to the Truman 40 on a fake. That drive would stall but Fred pinned the Bulldogs back at their own nine.

Late in the third, Fisher connected with Crochrell again for a three yard TD reception and a 21-3 lead.

McKendree would add a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown by the team's leading tackler A.J. Wentland. The linebacker was the reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week and led the Bearcats with 12 tackles.

Truman finished with 175 yards of total offense with Randy Schroeder completing 17-of-32 for 107 yards. Felix Neboh caught seven passes for 51 yards and a long of 17 and Andy Satulla led the rushing with 12 carries for 35 yards.

Fisher, who came into the game ranked third in Division II in total offense per game, ran for 78 yards on 17 attempts and passed for 196 on 26 completions out of 38 attempts.  Fisher even caught a pass for 12 yards in the third quarter scoring drive. McKendree finished with 413 yards of total offense.

Game Notes:
  • Joey Schenck caught five passes for 33 yards to finish the season with 71 receptions. That ties Andrew Blakely's 1999 total for seventh best in Truman history.

  • This was the first victory by McKendree over Truman out of four games played.
