Knights down Bulldogs in NCAA second round

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The stats were as even as they could be between the Great Lakes Valley Conference's top two teams, but it was a 30-yard goal that snuck just under the crossbar in the 47th minute by host Bellarmine that proved the difference in Truman women's soccer NCAA Div. II second-round contest on Saturday.

With the 1-0 defeat, the Bulldogs finish the 2015 season 15-3-5, with two of its three losses coming by a 1-0 score at Bellarmine. The Knights (17-2-2) advance to the third round with the victory and will play in the Midwest regional championship next weekend.

For the match, both teams took 10 shots and put four on goal. The Bulldogs earned two corner kicks and held the Knights to just one; however, BU's Lexy Hazle scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 47th minute from a shot 30 yards out that got in just under the crossbar. It was her first goal of the 2015 season.

Senior Alexis Heffernan (ANKENY, Iowa / Ankeny HS) led all Bulldogs with three total shots taken, while both senior Jessica Hanson (WILDWOOD, Mo. / Lafayette HS / Illinois State) and junior Stephanie Williams (WAUKEE, Iowa / Waukee HS / Kent State) each took two shots. Sophomore keeper Katie Mattingly (Perryville, Mo. / St. Vincent HS) made three stops in the match.

The four-member Bulldog senior class, consisting of Heffernan, Hanson, Taylor Park (LAKE SAINT LOUIS, Mo. / Wentzville Holt HS), and Megan Frkovic (ST. CHARLES, Mo. / Francis Howell North HS), helped guide the Truman program to 52 victories throughout the past four seasons, including two NCAA Div. II tournament appearances. The 2015 NCAA trip was the 11th in school history – all under the direction of head coach Mike Cannon.

In addition, the 23 matches played this season tied a program-high, equaling both the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Truman will return eight starters and 26 squadmembers for the 2016 season, which is set to begin next September.
