QUINCY, Ill. – A 9-0 run in the second quarter broke lifted the Truman Women's Basketball team to a 71-54 victory over Northern Michigan on Sunday afternoon. Four Bulldogs were in double-figures with Courtney Strait, Michalina Tomczak and Kasey Gassensmith each scoring 13 points.
 
There were five ties and four lead changes through the first quarter before Truman broke things open in the second. Gassensmith knocked down a pair of free throws to spark the run and was followed by a basket from Rachel Steinhoff, a three-pointer from Strait and a hoop from Montira Mosby to lead by eight, 31-23.
 
The Bulldogs took an 11-point lead into the break.
 
Northern Michigan could not make at Truman in the second half as the close as they got was eight.
 
The lead would swell to 17 points late in the fourth quarter as Truman outscored the Wildcats 22-15 in that final 10 minutes. The Bulldogs committed just two second half turnovers and only seven for the game.
 
Gassensmith had the early hot hand for Truman as she scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half. Tomczak scored 12 of her 13 in the second half and Strait had 13 on three, three-pointers, a field goal and a pair of free throws.
 
Cassidy Clark added 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Truman grabbed nine more rebounds and shot 45% from the floor for the game.
 
Northern Michigan was led by Chloe Tompkins 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting and three, three-pointers
 
Truman will open the home season with three straight games in Pershing Arena starting on Wednesday night against Central Christian College at 5:30 p.m.
