CHAMPS! Women's Soccer wins GLVC Tournament title

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - For the 10th time in program history, the Truman women's soccer team can call itself a conference champion, as the Bulldogs got a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 shutout of Missouri-St. Louis in the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference title game on Sunday afternoon at Bellarmine University.

Truman improved to 14-2-5 on the season and earned the GLVC's automatic bid into the NCAA Div. II tournament, which is slated to begin next Friday (Nov. 13) at a site to be determined. The NCAA's official selection show will take place on Monday (Nov. 9) at 5:30 p.m. (CST) via a webcast on NCAA.com.

"What a wonderful weekend for our team," head coach Mike Cannon said following Sunday's match. "The girls dealt with two extremely dangerous teams and came away with two brilliant results and our first GLVC title. Every time I don't think I can be any prouder of this group, they find a new level."

After advancing via penalty kicks in the semifinal against the No. 3 seed Quincy on Friday, Truman faced the No. 4 seed Tritons in Sunday's championship after UMSL upset top-seeded and weekend-host Bellarmine in the semifinals. UMSL had the first series of good looks starting in the 19th minute, as the red and white forced two saves by sophomore keeper Katie Mattingly (PERRYVILLE, Mo. // St. Vincent HS) and an end line save from the conference's Defensive Player of the Year, senior Jessica Hanson (WILDWOOD, Mo. // Lafayette HS // Illinois State).

Once Truman weathered that storm, action shifted to the other end, when, in the 36th minute, junior Megan Whitehead (ST. PETERS, Mo. // Incarnate Word Academy) sent a corner kick into the box and found fellow junior Megan Casserly (BALLWIN, Mo. // Marquette HS) who converted from just outside the six-yard box. It was Casserly's second goal of the season.

Then, in the 58th minute, Whitehead delivered again, this time sending a cross from the right side to a waiting Allison Lockett (O'FALLON, Mo. // Timberland HS). The sophomore headed the cross into the lower right corner, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead on her seventh goal of the season.

UMSL pushed the tempo late, even hitting the crossbar in the 68th minute, but Mattingly was up to the task all afternoon – registering her 11th shutout of the season by making four saves. The Tritons out-shot Truman, 14-4, but both of the Bulldogs' shots on goal went in, with the purple and white also taking three corner kicks to UMSL's two.

"This title represents the hard work and dedication that we have put in throughout the entire season," seniors Alexis Heffernan (ANKENY, Iowa // Ankeny HS) and Hanson said post-match. "Our team positivity and chemistry is the reason we have had so much success this year."

The first GLVC title in program history and 10th overall promises Truman its 11th NCAA Div. II postseason appearance – all under the direction of Cannon. Sunday marked the first conference title for the Bulldogs since 2009, when that year's squad posted a 13-2-1 regular season Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association conference record.
