Bulldogs Blast Blue Tigers for Wednesday Sweep

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - A three home run day for SR second baseman Andrea Klipsch put the cherry on top of a Bulldog sweep on Wednesday afternoon, as the Truman softball team picked up two run-rule victories against former-MIAA rival Lincoln (Mo.) at the Truman Softball Park.

The Bulldogs (17-5) took game one by a 10-1 score in four and a half innings before "walking off" with a 10-2 win in the bottom of the fifth in game two. Truman batted .392 as a team for the day and recorded seven extra-base hits – including five home runs – in the 8.2 innings the team spent at the plate.

Klipsch's seven RBIs on the day led the team, while JR third baseman Whitney Richardson led all players with four hits in the two games. SR first baseman Liz Leath and FR shortstop Jamie Fowle added three hits apiece for the purple and white, who will travel next to Drury and Missouri S&T this Saturday and Sunday to re-start GLVC play.

Game 1 (Truman 10-1, 5 inn.)
After a slow start, the Bulldogs put up five runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to pick up a 10-1 victory in game one against the Blue Tigers.

Leath got the scoreboard going in the bottom of the second, as she led off the inning with her seventh home run of the season.

An unearned run for the Blue Tigers in the top of the third evened the score, before Klipsch belted her first of the day – a three-run shot over the right field fence that brought home both Fowle and FR center fielder Riley Cook. A Richardson RBI single later in the inning scored SO catcher Lex Van Nostrand, before SO designated player Devin Gudehus drew a bases-loaded walk to push the score to 6-1.

In the fourth, Leath delivered an RBI single that brought Klipsch home, before Richardson curled a long ball around the left-field foul pole for a three-run trip around the bags and a 10-1 lead.

Truman had eight hits in the game, with Van Nostrand picking up her 11th stolen base of the season. JR Kelsea Dorsey struck out nine batters in four innings in the circle, before FR Kadie Orenstein pitched a clean fifth to close the game. Dorsey improved to 9-1 on the season and lowered her ERA to 1.61 with the victory.

Game 2 (Truman 10-2, 5 inn.)
Truman trailed, then led big, then walked off in game two of Wednesday's action, as a handful of fifth-inning miscues by the Blue Tigers helped Truman walk away with a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.

Lincoln jumped on top first, getting back-to-back base hits in the top of the first to go ahead 1-0 early. That lead was incredibly short-lived; however, as, after Fowle led off with a single in the bottom of the first, Klipsch delivered her second blast of the day out to right to give Truman the lead at 2-1.

The Bulldogs extended the lead to 4-1 in the second when Fowle singled home FR designated player/first baseman Ashley Murphy, before a sacrifice fly from Klipsch scored JR center fielder Nikki Moss.

Then, in the third, Moss wielded the big stick, smacking a triple to straightaway center field, bringing home SO right fielder Haley Wells and SR left fielder Ally McReynolds for a 6-1 lead. One inning later, Klipsch bombed her second home run of the game, third of the day, and 10th of the season out to left center for a 7-1 lead.

LU would put back-to-back two-out hits together in the fifth off reliever Orenstein in the top of the fifth that cut the deficit to 7-2; however, the Bulldogs would score three unearned runs in the home half to walk away with the 10-2 win. Murphy scampered home on a passed ball for run No. 8, before Leath singled home Fowle for run No. 9. Finally, SR pinch-hitter Hannah Wehar saw her ball bobbled by the LU shortstop – allowing Klipsch to score the winning run.

Truman added 12 hits to the ledger in game two, as Fowle, Klipsch, Richardson, and Moss had two apiece. Fowle and Moss each added a swipe, while JR Kindra Henze started and pitched four innings in the circle. She improved to 8-4 on the season, as she allowed just three hits and struck out two. Orenstein's second appearace of the day resulted in one run in one inning of work.
