Henze, Freshmen Help Guide Softball to Monday Sweep of DU

Game 1 Box Score (Truman 3-2, 8 inn.)

Game 2 Box Score (Truman 7-1)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - - Senior Ally McReynolds reached base in seven of her eight at-bats, while sophomore Lex Van Nostrand pounded out five hits - including a 4-for-4 game one - in a Truman softball doubleheader sweep (3-2, 7-1) of Drury (Mo.) on Monday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (21-5, 11-1 GLVC) recorded 20 hits on the day, going to extra innings in game one before using a six-run fourth in game two to stay atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings by one game. While the offense was hitting a collective .323, the Truman pitching staff limited DU to just eight hits in 15 innings, with junior Kindra Henze earning both wins - one in relief and one complete game.

Truman faces its stiffest test of the season in a battle for first place on Friday afternoon, when the purple and white head to St. Louis to face No. 3 Missouri-St. Louis (25-3, 9-3 GLVC) at 12 p.m. The doubleheader precedes a Saturday afternoon twinbill in Kirksville, when Truman plays host to Maryville (7-18, 4-8 GLVC) at 12 p.m. at the Softball Park.

Game 1 Recap

A go-ahead solo home run by freshman Jamie Fowle in the top of the eighth proved to be the decisive run, as the Bulldogs took game one by a 3-2 score in eight innings.

Drury scored first in the bottom of the second inning off a home run by Chantal Oelrich, before the Bulldogs evened things in the third on a Van Nostrand RBI single. Van Nostrand played a nearly-flawless game, collecting four hits in four at-bats while also stealing her 12th and 13th bases of the year.

After Fowle led off the seventh with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifce bunt by senior Andrea Klipsch, the Panthers loaded the bases with walks to Van Nostrand and senior Liz Leath. A fielder's choice at the plate accounted for the second out, before McReynolds drew a walk of her own - trotting Van Nostrand across the plate for a 2-1 lead.

However, that lead was short-lived, as Oelrich again homered to lead off the seventh inning, before DU put runners on first and second with one out against Bulldog starter Kelsea Dorsey. Head coach Erin Brown turned to Henze in relief, who immediate got a fielders choice groundout and a strikeout to quench the threat.

Then, with two outs in the top of the eighth, Fowle lifted her third home run of the season out to right-center field for a 3-2 lead, before Henze got the final three outs - including a strikeout of Oelrich with a runner on first - in the home half to preserve the win.

In addition to Van Nostrand's four-hit game, both Fowle and McReynolds tacked on two hits apiece. Eleven runners left on base nearly doomed the 'Dogs, who out-hit DU 11-5 in the game. Dorsey threw 6.1 innings of four-hit ball, striking out five, while Henze allowed one hit and struck out two in her 1.2 innings of relief. She picked up her 10th win of the season.

Game 2 Recap

A big six-run fourth, coupled with a masterful outing by Henze, helped Truman pick up the doubleheader sweep, as the purple and white took game two by a 7-1 margin.

Truman's fourth inning consisted of six runs on five hits - all with two outs - while a DU error continued the inning for the heart of the Bulldog lineup. Freshman Ashley Murphy delivered a key two-run double, while Van Nostrand added a two-run single of her own alongside a Leath RBI single.

Meanwhile, Henze was nearly untouchable in the circle, as she worked through the Panther lineup by allowing  just three baserunners through the first six innings. She faced the minimum through four - thanks to two pick-offs by Van Nostrand, before the Panthers manufactured a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Truman had scored one in the top half off a sacrifice fly by Murphy for the 7-1 final.

Murphy's team-high three RBI came on a 2-for-3 day at the plate, with Leath also adding two hits in three at-bats. The Bulldogs out-hit DU 9-3 in the game, leaving eight runners on base. Henze, meanwhile, struck out seven while allowing just three hits in her 10th complete game of the year. She completed the past week with a 4-0 record and one save in five appearances.
