Men's BB Recap: #8 UW-Parkside 73, Truman 70

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - -  An authentic never-say-die attitude for the Truman men's basketball team almost carried the program to a quarterfinal upset in the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament; however, a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out, as the Bulldog season came to a close with a 73-70 loss against No. 8 Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday night in Family Arena.

The Bulldogs (20-10) trailed as many as 16 (43-27) early in the second half, but a combination of hot three-point shooting by the sixth-seeded 'Dogs and poor free throw shooting by the third-seeded Rangers allowed Truman to claw back into the game. Senior Reed Mells converted a lay-up with 11 seconds to play to bring the purple and white to within 71-70, but after a pair of Parkside free throws, a three-point try at the buzzer by junior Cole Myers caromed off three pieces of rim and bounced away, allowing the Rangers to advance to Saturday afternoon's GLVC semifinal.

After shooting just 25% in the first half and not getting to the foul line one time, the Bulldogs shot 18-of-31 (58.1%) against the GLVC's top-ranked defense in the second half – hitting five triples and converting on 10-of-14 free throw tries. The Bulldogs also turned a -20 halftime deficit on the glass into a +3 margin in the second half, while forcing the Rangers into 16 turnovers for the game.

Senior Seth Jackson led the Bulldogs with 22 points offensively, as he moved into the all-time top spot on the single-season scoring chart – surpassing the previous-high of 617 to finish his final Bulldog campaign with 623 points in 28 games played. Fellow senior Isaac Gardner added 17 points off the bench, hitting 5-of-7 shots (4-of-6 three-pointers) to go along with three free throws. He and Cole Myers shared the team-high with six rebounds each, while Jackson paired his team-high in scoring with a squad-best four assists.

Myers also finished with 10 points, with both Mells and sophomore Connor Erickson added six points apiece.

The Bulldogs will graduate four seniors, including Jackson, Mells, Gardner, and Patrick Burmester but will return three starters and 13 squad-members for the 2015-16 season, which will begin next November.
