Softball Sweeps Cardinals to Close Home Weekend

Game 1 Box Score (Truman 4-1)
Game 2 Box Score (Truman 8-4)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - A four-hit day by senior Liz Leath, and a pair of three-hit days for both senior Ally McReynolds and junior Nikki Moss helped the Truman softball team close weekend GLVC action with a sweep of William Jewell at the Truman Softball Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (26-8, 16-4 GLVC) took game one by a 4-1 score before building a big lead and holding on in game two for an 8-4 victory. Truman hit .327 as a team on the day, with junior Kelsea Dorsey logging both a save (her first) and a win (her 13th) alongside Kindra Henze's 13th win of the season as well.

Truman returns to the field with three road doubleheaders this next week, beginning with a nonconference twin-bill at Northwest Missouri this Tuesday (April 14) at 2 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.

Game 1 Recap
Kindra Henze and Kelsea Dorsey combined for a 6-hit pitching performance, while six different Bulldogs recorded one hit apiece offensively in a 4-1 Truman win in game one.

Truman scored two in the second, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth, whereas William Jewell could only push one across in the third inning. Haley Wells and Nikki Moss recorded RBIs early, before Jamie Fowle netted her fifth home run of the season with a solo shot late.

William Jewell committed four errors in the game, leading to two unearned runs, while Henze struck out four in her 5.1 innings of starting work to improve to 13-7 on the year. Dorsey, meanwhile, entered in relief and struck out four of the five batters she faced to earn her first save of the year and first since 2012.

Game 2 Recap
William Jewell brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but a game-ending, bases-loaded groundout helped the Bulldogs hold on for an 8-4 win and doubleheader sweep.

The Bulldogs were yanked out of cruise control mode in the sixth, as the purple and white had built a 7-0 lead through five innings. Truman used a six-run sixth, fueled by three Jewell errors and four Bulldog hits to post a wide gap, before adding one more in the fifth on a Wells RBI single.

But from there, WJC began to chip away, putting up four in the sixth – inducing a Bulldog pitching change that brought Henze on in relief of Dorsey – before a Truman insurance run was purchased in the sixth with an Andrea Klipsch RBI single.

After getting two of the first three batters out in the seventh, Jewell would load the bases for Nona Pauline, who grounded out to second base to end the threat and give the Bulldogs win No. 26 in game No. 34.

Dorsey started and improved to 13-1 on the year with her 5.2 innings of work, where she struck out two and gave up three hits. Henze faced nine batters in relief, striking out one.

Leath (three), Klipsch (two), McReynolds (two), and Moss (two) each posted multi-hit games as part of 11 total by the Bulldogs. Klipsch led all Bulldogs with three RBI, with Kadie Orenstein added two RBI of her own.
