Box Score (HTML)

ROLLA, Mo. – The Truman Women's Basketball team won their fourth straight and pulled into a first place tie in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division with a 51-42 road win over Missouri S&T on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs are now 14-6 overall and 8-2 in the GLVC while the Lady Miners fall to 6-11 overall and 2-8 in the league. Truman joined Quincy and Drury atop the West as the Lady Panthers downed the Lady Hawks in a battle of nationally-ranked foes 76-55 in Springfield. Truman and Quincy will exchange dance partners for Saturday with the Bulldogs heading to Drury and Quincy facing Missouri S&T.

How It Happened:
  • The Lady Miners hit three of their first eight shots and led 12-4 in the first quarter. Truman scored six straight behind baskets by Linnea Schmelzer, Kasey Gassensmith and free throws by Cassidy Clark to pull within two at the end of the quarter.
  • S&T maintained a lead throughout the second until Michalina Tomczak knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 19 heading into the locker room. Rachel Steinhoff and Ashley Hartwig provided big shots in the quarter to keep the Lady Miners from pulling away.
  • The third quarter was all Truman. The Bulldogs outscored S&T 17-4 with Steinhoff scoring nine of her game-high 14 points in that 10 minute span. The Lady Miners went 1-of-13 from the field, missing all five three-point attempts.
  • To add insult into injury, Mackenzie Jerks buried a 30-foot shot at the end of the quarter to give Truman their largest lead at 36-23.
  • S&T fought back and scored eight of the first nine points of the fourth quarter forcing a Truman timeout with the Bulldogs leading by six at 37-31.
  • Gassensmith, Steinhoff and Cassidy Clark combine for five straight out of the TO and brought the lead back out to 11 with 4:26 left.
  • A three-point play by Bria Pierce with 24 seconds showing pulled S&T back to within seven but Michalina Tomczak dashed any comeback by knocking down her 10th and 11th free throws of the night to finish the scoring.

Key Stats/Game Notes:
  • Tomczak's free throw shooting (11-of-12) was the fifth best by a Bulldog with a minimum of 10 made. Angie Brown (vs. Simpson in 1982) and Amy Eagan (vs. Fort Hays in 1998) both went 12-of-12 at the line while Georgia Mueller (vs. Nebraska-Omaha in 2009) hit all 11 of her free throws. Mueller also went 11-of-12 against Fort Hays in 2009.
  • All of Tomczak's 11 points came from the line and her and fellow leading scorer Courtney Strait did not make a field goal attempt on the night. Tomczak added five rebounds and a pair of blocks.
  • Strait went scoreless for the first time in 59 games (vs. Missouri S&T in 2014) and only for the 10th time out of 105 games played.
  • Steinhoff led all Truman scorers with 14 points in 39 of 40 minutes of work.
  • Truman ended up shooting 31.8% from the floor, and 20% from three, however the used the foul line to outscore S&T by eight (21-of-29 to 13-of-19).
  • S&T was led by Bria Pierce's 14 points. The Lady Miners were held to only 11 points total in the second and third quarters and went 4-of-26 from the field during that span. They would shoot 25.5% as a team for the game and made three of 14 three-point attempts.
  • The Lady Miners had 20 turnovers and Truman scored 18 points off of those 20 miscues.
  • A total of five players, four for Missouri S&T fouled out of the game.
  • It was the ninth time this season and fourth time in conference that Truman has held an opponent to under 50 points in a game. This was overall game number 20 and conference game number 10.
