Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE – Two 13-0 runs in key spots lifted the Truman Women's Basketball team to a weekend home sweep of GLVC games as they defeated Illinois Springfield 67-48 on Saturday afternoon. Courtney Strait tallied 14 points in the fourth quarter for the 'Dogs.

The visitors led by two at the end of the first quarter but the Bulldog defense would clamp down. Truman held the Prairie Stars scoreless for the first six minutes of the second. Meanwhile, the Bulldog offense ignited by going 8-of-11 in the quarter and scoring 13 straight to take a 35-20 lead at the break. UIS went 1-of-17 from the field scoring just two points.

Kasey Gassensmith was the early leader for Truman with 12 first half points.

In the third, UIS whittled away at the 15 point advantage with a 9-1 run. Gassensmith broke free with a hoop and Truman restored a double-digit leading heading to the final quarter.

The Prairie Stars scored the first six and closed to within five points before Strait took over. The senior drained her first three-pointer of the game and hit another shot a possession later to maintain an eight-point lead.

Meredith Marti pulled UIS back to five with second three-pointer of the game with 5:01 showing.

That would be the last field goal for UIS as Truman dropped the hammer with their second 13-0 run. Michalina Tomczak erased a pair of Prairie Star shots on consecutive trips down the floor then spun around in the lane for a bucket to start the run.

Strait scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and 17 for the game. Gassensmith finished with 16 and Steinhoff added a dozen. Truman shot 49% from the field.

Shelbi Patterson paced the Prairie Stars with 13 points, all in the second half after being tagged with two quick fouls to start the game. UIS shot 32.2% from the field and were outscored at the free throw line by nine (15-to-6).

The Bulldogs will embark on a two-game road swing through the Ohio Valley next weekend. They will be at Bellarmine in Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday night before stopping at Evansville and Southern Indiana next Saturday afternoon.
