KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Quarterback Jaden Barr tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another as the Truman Bulldogs remained perfect in Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a 31-24 victory over William Jewell (Mo.) College for homecoming.

Barr was 17-of-26 for 270 yards using three different receivers for scores. He ran the ball eight times for 44 yards and his two-yard power up the middle in the third quarter proved to be the difference in the contest.

The game got off to an auspicious start with Anthony Mullins returning the opening kickoff 99 yards to give the Cardinals the 7-0 lead. It was the first kickoff returned for a touchdown against the Bulldogs since the 2013 season.

The Bulldogs struck right back as Barr engineered an eight-play, 71-yard drive ending with Drew Slager catching an 11-yard TD pass. Barr hit Joey Schenck for 25 yards on third and nine to keep the drive going. Truman was 7-of-9 on third downs in the first half and Slager made the most of his six catches. The freshman caught six for 65 yards with five of the catches going for first downs and the other for a score.

Jordan Salima caught a screen pass and raced 42-yards on the next Truman possession to put the Bulldogs up 14-7.

The Cardinals clawed back early in the second quarter with Brandon Womack's 52-yard field goal at the 12:37 mark. Schenck and the 'Dogs answered right back as the senior hauled in a 27-yard TD pass from Barr to stake the Bulldogs up 21-10.

Truman grinded out the halftime clock with a 17-play, 67-yard drive resulting in a 35-yard field goal by Nick Dolezal with 52 seconds left in the second quarter.  The Bulldogs were three of four on third down during the possession including Slager's 12-yard reception on third and 11.

Jewell rallied from 17 down the last time they were the homecoming opponent in 2014 and threatened again in this year's game. The Cardinals scored on their first possession of the second half with Derrick Strzelecki running in from 17 yards out to get within a touchdown.

Barr and Schenck connected for a 42-yard pass play on the next Truman possession and three plays later Barr scored from two yards out to put Truman up 31-17.

The Cardinals would not go away. Early in the fourth, the Cardinals got to the Truman 3 but on fourth down, Brad Strauss' pass was tipped by Austin Zoda into the hands of T.J. Fine for the interception. On the next Jewell possession, the Cardinals had first and goal at the Truman two and were stuffed four straight times for the turnover on downs.

After forcing Truman to punt from their own endzone, Jewell converted on a fourth and nine at the Truman 12 then Strauss hit Bulla Graft for a three-yard pass with 50 seconds left to cut the lead down to seven.

Slager came up big one final time as he dove to his left to secure the onsides kick attempt and Truman was able to run out the clock for the win.

Truman rolled up 419 yards of total offense with 149 on the ground and 270 through the air. Jewell was held to 296 yards on 58 rushing and 238 passing. Strauss was 27-of-37 for 238 yards with Mullins catching 10 passes for 93 yards.

The Bulldogs will host Quincy University next Saturday night for Senior Day at Stokes Stadium. The Hawks lost a non-conference game to Davenport (Mich.) 14-10 on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. with senior day festivities beginning at 5:30.
