RECAP: Truman 3, Indianapolis 0

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - For senior Kayla Bastian (pictured), nights like Friday in Pershing Arena are what make it all worth it. The 5-11 outside hitter became the 17th member of Truman volleyball's illustrious 1,000-kill club in the second set against Indianapolis thanks to a strike from the left side of the net. Not only that, but the Bulldogs put together their most complete effort of the season and fourth sweep of the year, this time over the Greyhounds.

Truman has won six of its last seven in GLVC play to improve to 11-14 overall and 8-4 in the league. On the other side, Indianapolis had its six-match winning streak snapped to fall to 12-11 in 2016 and  7-5 in the conference. The home team hit .245 to just .072 by its visitors and was hitting a red-hot .290 at the intermission.

Individually, the three Bulldog seniors ended up with eight kills apiece including the aforementioned Bastian, Lacey Hill and Bailey O'Drobinak. Bastian also had 19 digs as well as three service aces, both of which led the squad. Other leaders included Savvy Hughes with 26 assists and Natalie Brimeyer with four blocks. Lauren Wacker dug out 15 balls and has had at least 10 in that category for all but four matches of her freshman campaign.

The Breakdown
  • In the first set, UIndy led 3-1 early on before Truman scored 17 of the next 22 points to storm out to a 10-point advnatage, 18-8.
  • From that point on, the Greyhounds were never closer than six points (18-12), and the Bulldogs cruised to a set-one victory.
  • The second set saw much of the same, but it took a little longer for the hosts to get things going.
  • 17 points in, the away team was trailing by only one, 9-8, and the hosts flipped a switch.
  • They used a 16-7 spurt for the rest of the set, won by 10 again, and had a two sets to none lead.
  • The third set was obviously the tightest one of the contest as it saw a combined five ties and two lead changes.
  • The final deadlock came at 8-8 and that 16th point was in the midst of a 8-3 run for the Bulldogs that saw them go up 15-11.
  • After that, the Greyhounds were never closer than two before the final three-point margin.

Next up, Truman will host Saint Joseph's on Saturday with first serve set for 1 p.m. inside Pershing Arena. It will be Senior Day for the program as it plans to honor Bastian, O'Drobinak and Hill prior to the start of play.
